Had 2 large lime size neck masses and all accessible lymph nodes removed 9 days ago in a full neck dissection . Emanating from SCCUP . Clinic review to have staples removed next Friday .
i managed on 8 paracetemol 4x1000 and one oxynorm 5mg for 6 day hospital stay but told staff in days before I left that pain on dissection side had doubled in the lower section and swallowing had become more difficult . Discharged without prescription and told to continue paracetemol .
Pain debilitating now so intend to call y GP tomorrow to see if I can add 1/2 oxynorm daily until reviewed .
Does pain level sound normal ? It is very debilitating .
Any views appreciated . Thank you .

I was discharged after my neck dissection with gabapentin, paracetamol and ibuprofen. While these had kept pain at bay while I was in hospital they weren’t nearly as effective at home. Paracetamol on its own wouldn’t have touched it. When I went to get my staples removed, the nurse said I would be ok to add codeine to the cocktail. GP was happy to prescribe and this lot got me through. I staggered the doses rather than taking them all at once so that I was getting a top up of pain relief of one sort or another regularly throughout the day. I would definitely ask your GP for some supplementary relief.
As to whether the pain levels are normal…not sure there is any ‘normal’ in all this. We all have different tolerances and experiences. You’ve had some pretty serious surgery. Nothing worse than persistent pain….particularly when there’s stuff out there to ease it.
Hope you soon get this resolved.

Yes Liz is on the money.
My husband is going into hospital tomorrow for a new knee. I know it’s not the same but he is being sent home with paracetamol and codeine ( rather than cocodomol) so that he can stagger the doses. His consultant seems to understand post op pain very well.
Hope you get to feel better soon

I agree with Liz, after my neck dissection I was already on Gabapentin and was discharged with paracetamol, codeine and oramorph on top. My pain was so bad I took the morphine for quite a while after I was home! Paracetamol alone would've been useless. Our surgeries and healing are all unique to us, I've learnt there's no normal path through this. Get whatever pain relief you need to get you through and don't be a hero, be strict about taking it on schedule, keep ahead of the pain if you can. Hope you get some relief from better pain management soon.
