Hello, My partner is now 8 weeks post RT for tonsil/tongue Cancer. He is trying to up his food intake and is doing reasonably well with eating. Some foods are easier than others and he needs to have water to help get the food down. His throat is still sore at times and his tongue is still a little swollen which causes his speech to be a bit slurred. The dietician wants him to start weaning off using his RIG. He is still having 2 protein drinks a day to up his calories as he's lost alot of weight and his food portions are still pretty small in comparison to what he ate previously. He is having 2 Frusibin and Fortisips orally daily but he really hates them as they taste not nice, chocolate one is better, however, he finds he feels quite sick afterwards as they are quite rich. Can anyone recommend an alternative that he could try? Even when he put them through his RIG he found he felt sick afterwards. Many thanks in advance for all your advice.
Hi Other Half, I have only just finished my treatmentvand I am now purely on the liquid feeds and I have found exactly the same thing. In fact, I have just 'disgorged' my last feed and now that's those calories down the drain, it is worrying.
I hope your OH and I can find a solution soon.
Hugs, Hazel x
Thank you Hazel for your prompt reply. I've just read your profile and you've certainly been through a rough time. My partner like you had 6 weeks of gruelling radiotherapy. It's blooming awful isn't it! It has taken these last 8 weeks for my partner to try eating as his mouth was really sore with ulcers plus thick mucus and everything tasted disgusting. The thick mucus has now gone but lack of saliva now so sipping water whilst eating helps to wash it down. He can't eat curries or anything mildly spicy now and he finds toast too scratchy for his throat. You are still early days after end of treatment but it will get better and you'll find a new way of eating and what food works. Sending you big hugs. Susan x
Try any kind of smoothie. Banana avocado and peanut butter whizzed up with ice cream or even a Fortisip. Lots of recipes for smoothies on internet.
Try poached eggs which need no chewing and just slip down. The same with tinned peaches.
Scrambled eggs with Philly to keep them soft.
Im sure others will come up with more.

Hi some tried complan from supermarkets with full fat milk. There scan shakes which you a try to get on prescription from memory they are high calories. Protein yoghurts from supermarkets.
I found I could easily get 500 calories from a fruit tea cake toasted with grilled cheese on top then a poached egg on top of that washed down with Luke warm peppermint tea sounds revolting but was ok Home made chicken veg soup fortify with double cream. Poached eggs were a good in between snack. I was told 2500 calories every day and 2-3 litres if water. Try the frusibjn in a smoothie with ababa and protein powder.
these book might help with ideas
Well done both in getting through treatment

Thank you Dani, yes perhaps as you say, make up our own smoothies to increase the calories.
Thanks Hazel, I will try the Complan, the Ensure drinks that I have taste revolting (especially when they come through reflux.)

Hi
I couldn't tolerate Ensure through my feeding tube, serious bouts of vomiting landed me in hospital for 12 days..... lost 16kg in 2-3 weeks....in hospital they changed my feed to Jevity which thankfully stayed down....my weight stabilised....

Hi, Other half, if you can load him up with calories, milk puddings with lots of cream, porridge with lots of cream, mashed potatoes with cream and butter, are all good for getting the calories he needs, and if he can drink lots of full cream milk Don't worry about it not being healthy, a few weeks won't hurt.

Hi Other half. Well done to your husband,he is doing really well at this point in his recovery and is getting such great support from you. I have just swapped from Fortisip to Sustagen with fibre that I can buy at the chemist's. It doesn't seem so sweet and has all the calories etc that Fortisip has. As well as drinking it I use it to soften a slice of soft cake and then add pureed fruit and custard, yoghurt or icecream. Still get the calories but don't have the intense taste of the Sustagen. I also soften weet bix with water and Sustagen and add pureed fruit and custard. For something more savoury I puree a shop bought Shepherd's pie with steamed veg and natural yoghurt. The shop bought Shepherd's pie is not as fibrous as mince I find so easier to eat. A bit healthier than all the sweet stuff. You can make all manner of home made soups and puree them and they are nice for something more savoury. Add full fat milk to anything you make to get the consistency your husband can manage and that adds up the calories.
