ok, my wife isn't convinced that my recent dental visit will be free... are NHS dentals free or do we now have to apply for a medical exemption certificate.. so far, my treatments have been free, but searching online it doesn't look very promising..

  • No you pay the same as you ever did

You are entitled to restorative work in a dental hospital if the damage is a result of your treatment or if you need invasive work such as extractions , and that is free. How long you might wait is another matter.

  • In Scotland dental check-ups are free ....and prescriptions....everything else is charged unless you are on certain benefits  or under 26 years old....restorative dentistry also FoC.

    How about treatment?
I think NHS check ups are free in wales but NHS dentists are like hen’s teeth.
I’ve been on a waiting list for 12 years.

  • Some exemptions for free treatment... free check-ups now yearly...NHS dentists? no problem my area... other areas not so great....some treatment costs have doubled/tripled.

Lack of NHS dentists, costs and altered frequency of check-ups may lead to discovery of mouth and neck cancers being missed or caught late...

  • Good evening, Beau Chapeau. It can be very complicated to determine what people are entitled to. I'm on ESA benefits and get it free, but other benefits apply for free treatment. I cannot see why you should have to start paying if you have not paid in the past. This is where going online can confuse people. Maybe you can phone or e-mail someone to clarify it. Good luck, take care.

  • Hi Loz

Why don't you ring them and ask as they will be able to clarify the situation for you.

P.S. I am lucky where I live in Adelaide as the Dental Hospital is great and see me regularly with no charge as I am now a pensioner. The U.K. sounds a bit more complicated.

  • Hi Peter you are in scotland  in England we have to pay even as a hnc patient unless  it’s a referral ti restorative dentist. I pay a private scheme called den plan   that allows me 4 visits  per year 2 hygienist s and 2 dentists. Otherwise I would be seen once a year. Sadly hnc patients get overlooked. I’m lucky my dentist is NHS so any work is done at NHS rates.
