Shoulder discomfort and lump

Good evening everyone. My husband finished treatment in April and then had a neck dissection in August. His shoulder on the side of the dissection is very tight and sore and he thinks he can feel a lump along the top of his shoulder. I can’t feel it but wonder if it could just be a muscle knot, but he says it feels very hard. He is obviously very anxious. Anyone else experience this after surgery/treatment. Obviously we will flag it up but not due to see consultant for another few weeks.

  • Hi

Don't hesitate to ring his CNS if he is worried.  I had a few scares and they always got me in quickly between routine appointments to reassure me.  The neck can get quite stiff and sore after a dissection.  I found playing hot water on my neck in the shower each day helped ease the stiffness.

  • Hi Worrylo

Like Peter I have had one or two scares feeling lumps that I was concerned about. Each time my lovely consultant has done a thorough check and reassured me that it is nothing. After my neck dissection it felt very tight and there were lumps and bumps but this settled down over time and were nothing. However get reassurance from your consultant and that will put your husband's mind at rest.

  • Hi. Following a neck dissection I had the same concerns. My consultant had a look and explained that my neck anatomy now feels different. For me the lump I worried about was a saliva gland that was previously buried under lymph nodes. I could also feel hard lumps which were internal stitches. Nevertheless he said I had done the right thing to mention it and get it looked at. Mention it to your CNS and they can advise you.

  • Hi Worrylo,

I am in nearly the same time frame as your husband - finished treatment in February and had radical neck dissection in July.

I also have a hard lump at along the top of my shoulder/collarbone. My Physio said it was the top of the shoulder blade which was visible due to the removal of the neck muscle and axillary nerve. He told me not to worry. I am fortunate that I have no real discomfort in my shoulder but I do the prescribed exercises every morning which seems to help. Have you been referred to a Physiotherapist? It may be an idea to ask your CNS (Nurse) for an appointment to see one to get some advice and support.

  • Good evening Worrylo, i had the same after my neck dissection which just turned out to be part of the muscles etc healing up. I dont think its anything to worry about due to how close it is to the operation but please contact your team if you are worried, most of us have done the same and in most cases its nothing to worry about. Best wishes
