Hi just wee question was wondering if the numbness and lymphodema under chin ever lessens over time. I do all my exercises multiple times during the day and drainage in the am. Sometimes it just happens throughout the day for no reason even though I walk 8 km every day and do two exercise classes every day which include pilates and yoga and I am constantly on the go all day . I know it's maybe a silly question but the feeling in my chin can be unbearable at times. Also I feel after my head and neck dissection my speech was perfect but I find with RT it's not as good. I find it feels slurred and that my tongue feels very big in my mouth. I had a small section removed during surgery but not a reconstruction. These seem very trivial questions compared to some problems but I was was wondering if time helps. I'm 14 weeks post RT now. Grateful for any answers thank you so much x
For me it has got better after time. I am now 7 1/2 months post treatment and my tongue can still feel swollen at times in the area hit the most by RT. My lymphodema has now gone - or at least I feel like I am back to my old double chin and no longer worried by the swelling. Like you I worked on it daily and over time it has reduced significantly. I you have not seen a specialist lymphodema nurse try to see one as they have lots of tips and tricks that the standard ENT just don't know of.
I really was not significantly affected in the mouth/neck by my surgeries, but CRT has had a major effect, but that is reducing. Even this week I reflected on my eating and suddenly realised that it is much better than just 3 weeks ago. Speech can be difficult especially if my tongue/throat is traumatised by eating too much, but that is transient.
Time is the great healer x
Thank you Peter that is good to know. Yes I too wasn't affected with the surgery it was RT that leaves me feeling like this. I did see a lymphodema nurse two weeks ago and she was very good. Hopefully over time things will improve and all my exercises will help. I have very fine features so I probably notice it more than others. The stiffness and pain can be sore at times but I just keep doing the exercises. Thank you x
are you seeing a lymphoedema nurse/clinic? maybe a word with your CNS to fit you in, if it's becoming a problem.

Thank you, yes seen a lymphodema nurse and she was very good. It's just no matter how often I do the exercises it still feels full and very stiff. So wondered if time will ease it. X
if you have a follow up appointment, mention it, they have more intense methods of getting things moving, and you may get a collar to help you..

Were you told about compression collars at the clinic? I was advised to get one (this one was not on prescription). Although expensive it was really good. I used it when I was not doing anything too mobile - sitting watching TV, driving etc. I could not use it overnight as I found it too hot, but lots do. Link below. They often have discount vouchers and remember you can claim it VAT free.
