PEG out time - looking for advice

I will be having my PEG (not RIG) removed in the not too distant future.  When it was put in we discussed removal and I was given 2 options.  1 - remove it the way it went in with an endoscope and 2 - cut it close to the skin and push it in and leave it to naturally work its way through the body.

I had no problems with the insertion procedure using the endoscope.  I have difficulty with the thought process of the PEG just coming out naturally - what if it gets stuck!!  With the endoscope I do worry abut the possibility of bloating, but I had no problems with the insertion.  However I hear of others that did...

So I am looking experiences of the removal to help me decide

Thank you.

  • Was this Kirsty, the same one who inserted it?  She also assured mentioning pulling it out wasn’t an issue. I’ll go that route

  • Hi. I've looked through my info and my PEG was a Corflo. I think yours maybe a Freka hence the difference in removal. Sorry if my experience hasn't helped your decision making. All the best and once it is out the hole does heal surprisingly quickly. I'm left with a dimple - a bit like a second belly button! Xx

    Hi DesRoss

Not sure if it was Kirsty who removed PEG....Gemma inserted my PEG.....

Removal? I was a wee bit worried beforehand.....but it was a very simple process....relatively pain free....no problems....

  • Hi

My PIG is the same (umberella bumper) when Im ready they will have to cut it and push it in to come out on its own.

I understand your worries but my PEG nurse and CNS assures me that they do come put , maybe het some Lactalose ready

    Hope it goes wellFingers crossed

  • Hi, I might be too late to this chat but I had the cut and push method. Took seconds and no problems with passing the disc.  Indeed, no awareness of when I passed it (she says pulling a freaked out face!). I was so in my head about having the PEG (the notion of feeding that way) and felt quite stressed about removal (like you, was worried about it getting stuck) but it was all fine...

  • Just thought I would do an update to close off this post.  I had a Freka PEG which has an internal small flexible plastic disk to hold it in place.  Thus it cannot be pulled out through the stoma.

I decided that the lesser trauma with still having a very sensitive throat was to have it removed by cutting the tube and pushing the remainder in and for nature to take its course.  The alternative was another endoscopy procedure.

The "cut and push" too a few seconds and was painless.  I took movicol for a few days to ensure an easy passage Rofl

That was 3 weeks ago.  Since I have no discomfort I assume it came out.  I certainly was not going to search for it!!

  • You missed out on saving it Slight smile

Mine was a "just lay there still and I'm going to yank it out, I won't tell you when but will just do it"

I then bought it home with me and still have it (along with my mask)

Made it to Christmas, made it to my birthday, had a nice summer, made it to my 2nd (and 3rd) Christmas now writing a blog about my treatment - https://www.1in1440.co.uk/april-2018-you-have-cancer/
  • I still have my mask along with other "war" trophies such as the traction pin and K-nail I had in my leg when I broke my femur at 17.
