Got a biopsy on my tongue tomorrow at Guildford , any tips on pain management greatly appreciated.

  • Take painkillers before the anaesthetic wears off rather than waiting until it does.

Watch the stitches don't catch in your teeth...mine did and that really hurt!!

Eat really soft food (or even just liquid) for 1st 24 hours or so. Don't try to eat/drink anything too hot.

  • I think you will be surprised how quickly you bounce back from the biopsy.  The advice from Teee7 is good although I never had stitches for any of my biopsies that I know of.  I guess they glued it back together.

  • Good evening Mr. Anxious, I have not had a biopsy done on my tongue but have a few in other areas of the head and neck, you should be prescribed painkillers at the hospital where you have the biopsy so don't be afraid to ask for some, the only one that gave me quite a bit of pain was when I had one done on my lower jaw so I ended up on strong painkillers, the others I just took paracetamol or ibuprofen. As teee7 mentioned mind what you eat soft and non-spicy is a safe bet. Hopefully, you will not be in to much pain, good luck, and all the best.

  • Thanks all , hoping to dodge the bullet this time after stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2020

  • Here's hoping all comes back clear.
