Hi everyone. My husband finished his treatment on good friday . 2x chemo 30 Rads Hpv+ base of tongue SCC. Its been tough to say the least. Tbh though I think he's done really well as we have managed to keep the pain under control and he can still swallow.
My main concern is now that he's only having fortisips and he's supposed to be having 6 of the 2kcal. This isn't because of the pain but because he cannot bear the taste of food or the fortisips we've tried everything to try to get him to eat and boy has he tried. He says he can't explain how it feels to eat even water tastes disgusting. He sits with a fortisip for at least 30 minutes just looking at it. Unfortunately he's only having 3 fortisips which is only 1200 cals a day. I've spoken to him about a tube and he was dead against it but he's starting to lose a lot of weight he was 84 k at the start now he's about 73kg. Surely this cannot go.on how can he recover without nutrition?
This morning he said maybe we need to phone the hospital to see about a tube. How does this happen will be an NGT first I'm sure the dietician at christies said they would try it first. He's so squeamish and will be so anxious about it. Willigave to feed him and will he still be able to eat and drink through the mouth if if can manage it along the line. Do you agree that this is the only option atm? With him not going to the hospital everyday now its difficult to get advice from them. There is a holiness we can use though. I think he feels its a fail if he gets a tube, but I cannot see him gettg better if he isn't having enough nutrition.
Thanks Gail x
Sorry for mistakes I'm trying to type this on my phone. There isn't a holiness Just a hot line
Hi Gail. I had an NG tube. It didn’t get in the way and didn’t stop me eating. It’s a little unpleasant, fleetingly, while it goes in but not painful. It’s easy to manage. I’d go for it as he does need calories and protein to heal. Hope this helps

Hi he certainly hasn’t failed if he has an ng tube. He’s done well to get this far but I credit my ng tube allowing me to recover like Dani really well without the worry of having enough nutrition mine was my lifesaver it’s not a competition tell him it’s a needs must. Yiu need a minimum of 2500 caloeies every day to include in my case 85 gram of protein 2-3 litres of water every day to get through recovery. The actual fitting is a few moments of discomfort and yes yiu can continue to eat whike it’s in. I had mine for last z3 weeks of treatment and first 3 weeks of recovery then I continued to sip the ensure drinks it’s a case if food is fuel there’s very little pleasure in the first few months. But I made a great recovery all down to ng tube . So ring the hot line.

Thank you for your reply. I've phoned and he's going to speak with a dietician tomorrow. He's also worried because atm he's suffering with a lot of mucas is is retching a lot esp in the night. I think hes worried it might dislodge.

I managed without a tube until last day of treatment but then had to be hospitalised as I became unable to keep anything down due to nausea. They gave me an NG tube which was actually brilliant - it takes away all the worry, effort & pain for swallowing. I got home after a few days (with stronger anti-nausea meds) and kept the tube in for a couple more weeks, using overnight pump feeding. The tube doesn't hurt, and you can go about your normal life when it's not connected to the pump. It takes a bit of getting used to - the hospital will give you & your husband training in how to use it - but it was well worth it for me. Good luck!

Thankyou for that. I think he's now resigned himself that this is the way forward and like you say its going to take away the worry too of not getting enough calories x
Good evening Gail, he definately needs more nutrition otherwise he will end up in hospital , i had the same taste issues with taste but thankfully i had a PEG( and still do ) i can swallow thin liquids like water tea and can even manage the basic cup a soups. I think they will offer him an NG tube rather than a PEG as its a lot more simple to fit so less worry about any minor surgery. Im afraid the food supplements are not the most appetising but are the quickest way of maintaining weight , at least if it goes through the tube he will not have to taste it. Good luck with the dietician. Take care.

Thank you Chris. You have certainly been through it. I'm hoping they offer him an NG so it will take away the anxiety of eating. I will keep.everyone posted.
