I am fully aware that the NHS is under pressure at the moment. But I have been trying to make an appointment with my GP for over 3 weeks now.

I made over 60 attempts this morning, only to find all the appointments were gone. My surgeon and my physio say I need to see my GP regarding pain in my shoulder as a consequence of my head and neck surgery. It’s only getting worse and now affects my left arm and hand. I have written to my MP today for what it’s worth. But I am feeling really low about the whole situation.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what did you do about it.

Debbie in despair

  • My hubby had the same problem but when you get through make sure you make the receptionist aware that you are in recovery as i found once i stated that they have helped more with making appointments for him.x

  • Hi Bridget

If urgent I usually email my surgery .... att of GP.....ask for call-back...usually works.

  • If you can maybe go to reception and explain. We're lucky here as you can get an appointment on the day if you go through the GP app at 8am but you have to be quick!

  • Debbie. Go to the surgery and explain. Does the surgery have econsult? If it does you should be able request a physio appointment

It’s disgraceful. The hospital shouldn’t be passing the buck. Try your CNS and ask for a referral there too.
The bottom line is that you might in the end have to pay privately.
They have saved your life and moved on. Awful!

  • We live in the dark ages and can’t email them sadly

  • No email or online communication with our surgery sadly

  • Hi Debbie

    T2N1M0 tonsil cancer

I was misdiagnosed twice by different GPs...nearly 2 years later swollen tonsil was not clearing up....my wife took photo of offending tonsil which I emailed to my surgery.... a different (more aware) GP recognised the symptoms and asked me to come in ASAP...after examination he made an urgent referral to ENT....email was a lifesaver.

  • Hi Debbie,

If both your surgeon & physio are saying you need to see your GP, why have neither referred you to him/her. That's what mine do, and then the Health Centre rings me to say I need an appt & they suggest suitable time. My H/C is same as yours, if you want GP appt, you have to try ringing at 0830, often by time you get through, they're all gone & you have to repeat the next day, ad nauseam x

  • If both your surgeon & physio are saying you need to see your GP, why have neither referred you

I would go even further. The referral needs to go to the hospital physio

  • Good evening Debbie have you tried going into the surgery and telling them your situation and telling them you are not leaving until something is done it normally does the trick but you should not be doing any of this as your consultant should write a letter/email to your Dr. There are quite a few of us who have had this sort of pain after surgery, i was given exercises by my consultant plus he sent a letter to my Dr explaining everything, sometimes you have to dig your heels in. I hope you can get an appointment a.s.a.p. All the best.
