After reading a few paragraphs on here I realise recovery is not

gonna be a quick thing. I was thinking a few weeks after my radio I would be eating back normal but by reading a few stories I see this isn’t gonna be the case. I can’t eat a thing now how many of those fortsips are people putting through their tubes. I’ve only been managing 2 a day. All I want to do is sleep I can’t swallow paracetamol I’m just snookered every which way. I can just manage a sip of water.

    Hi Mango

My Macmillan nurse advised using Oramorph 15 mins before eating, eased discomfort in throat during swallowing...

  • Hi. I used my PEG for water, liquid food & all meds (in liquid/soluble form) Try soluble Panadol via your tube. . I had all PEG food on prescription & fed overnight via a small pump. Didn’t get on with fortisips, there are alternatives including lactose free ones.  Ask your dietician/HENs nurse. As I recovered I reduced my reliance on the PEG & drank chocolate Scandishakes  to supplement the bits of food I could swallow. Scandishakes were on prescription. You make them up with full cream milk. I started off eating orally again with tiny amounts of creme caramel, custard, tops of  mini trifles, soft bit of cheesecake… & gradually increased the amounts I could eat. Soggy weetabix with whole milk was my go to for weeks.
I was on paracetamol, then added in Codeine, then morphine. Don’t struggle with pain -  It does get better. Hunker down, gets pain meds sorted & overnight feeding via a pump helps reduce the worry & stress about eating.
