Bone and Muscle aches

Hi everyone, I’m 16 weeks since last ChemoRadio.  I’ve lost 30kg in weight since treatment started.  I’m currently using EnsurePlus supplements, I eat soup mostly, but really struggle to eat much else.  I do try but I always pay for it.  I have absolutely zero appetite, when I do eat I can’t eat much, my throat seems to swell up regardless of what I put in there.  My consultant last told me I shouldn’t be losing any more weight.  But I physically can’t do anymore. I need to up my supplements but they constipate me dreadfully, the dietician says eat cream, fat, fat and more fat but I’m a little lactose sensitive so that causes issues, also don’t eat meat! 
for the past 2-3 weeks my bones and muscles are really causing me discomfort.  Particularly in my thighs, hips, neck and shoulders and this week my hands and wrists .  It wakes me at night.  Feels like rheumatism in my legs I used to get as a child.  
im wondering if I’m lacking Vitamin D or the like.  I haven’t mentioned it to my consultant and the team “ food police”

have any of you encountered this issue? Its so tiresome.

    Have you had some advice from your dietician about a drink supplement that is low lactose or lactose free. I believe Fortisip Compact is low lactose. Also ask about a drink supplement that has fibre in it. I have Fortisip with fibre and that really makes a difference to helping with constipation. I eat very little meat also and am on a mostly pureed diet but have found that I do not have a constipation issue as I try to eat foods with fibre as much as possible. I make my own soups and add in lots of different pureed veg and sometimes a tin of pureed baked beans that all have lots of fibre. I eat weet bix softened with hi fibre Fortisip  but you could use lactose free milk and add in pureed fruit for fibre. You can puree tinned fruit in juice or stew your own and puree. You can buy lactose free milk or use an alternative such as almond milk or coconut milk.

    Discuss this with your medical team as they will be able to set you in the right direction. A consult with a dietician should help.

    Unfortunately a low appetite is fairly standard at the moment but eating small meals regularly helps even if you don't feel like eating them.

    T2N1M0 tonsil cancer

    Have the oncology team fitted a PEG tub for feeding? helped me greatly post Chemo-Radiotherapy, lost weight rapidly during weeks 3 and 4, 10kg,  admitted to ward straight from radiotherapy session, weight stabilised during 12 day stay in hospital.

    I suffer from rheumatism have done so for past 20 years, taken off meds prior to chemo, no ill effects until about 10 weeks after CRT finished then it returned with a vengeance, consultation with a rheumatologist has lessened the problem/pain...steroid injection and back on meds (methotrexate)..

    Throat does take time to heal, thought I was never going to be able to stop taking Oramorph and Difflam but slowly things improved and I was able to stop the pain relief meds.

    I can now eat most things, taste gradually returning, love cups of tea and choccy biscuits.

    Treatment stared in April finished early June.

  • Good evening Nicky, it makes me sad reading this post because you should not be going through this with this discomfort, you must go back to your consultant and ask for a PEG or NG feeding tube so a dietician can recommend a more gut-friendly food supplement. Having a feeding tube will eliminate the need to swallow giving your swallowing a rest. The food supplements will contain most vitamins you need, i have been PEG-reliant for 10 years and my weight has remained stable but i take a laxative most days rather than suffer the dreaded constipation. There are so many different food supplements that are designed for people with issues/ tolerances with their diets, you will find yourself back in  hospital if something is not sorted although I'm sure your dietitian/consultant will get you back on track.   • Hi Nicky, perhaps some of your muscle pain is due to your weight loss, you may be losing muscle rather than fat with such large loss. I was getting a lot more protein than you have outlined, still lost weight and experienced muscle pains in legs and arms. Definitely talk to Drs/Dieticians. All the best Tina x
