Pain swallowing after tongue surgery and neck dissection

Hello I had surgery on Monday to have cancer removed from the right side of my tongue (re section) and selective neck dissection on the right side. I'm at home now recovering but a big problem I have is that it really hurts to swallow on my right side. Even after taking pain killers, it just hurts so much.

Has anyone else experienced this and if so, how long did it last?

Thsnk you.

  • Hi KitKat. So glad you are home. What pain killers are you on?

When I had mouth pain I took my morphine/paracetamol by the clock in front of the pain and found quite a bit of relief from Difflam fifteen minutes before trying to eat and when that didn't work too well swishing Oramorph around my mouth made it feel a little better.

My neighbour had tongue cancer and had a simple excision. She tells me the pain was much better after a week

    Best wishes

  • Hi Dani thanks for your reply. I'm taking Dihydrocodeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen every 4 hours. I'd say they take the edge of slightly but it still really hurts to eat and drink. I don't want to take codeine for long as it causes constipation.

  • Hi KitiKat. I had tongue flap and neck dissection surgery from both sides and took paracetamol and oxycodone which also makes you constipated but took laxido twice a day to combat it. It does get better after a week or so.

  • Hello kitkat , glad you are home . Did you stay at original hospital or went elsewhere , I'm same hospital as you

  • I don't want to take codeine for long as it causes constipation.

It does. the hospital should have given you Laxido or Movicol laxative sachets. You can Get them over the counter at the pharmacy. I was on morphine for nigh on 16 weeks and two sachets a day kept me regular

  • Hi KitKat

It does get better, I was a few weeks, then eating started to get easier . You will get there as Dani says keep up with the pain meds

  • I'm taking Dihydrocodeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen every 4 hours.

Try taking the codeine and paracetamol together every 4 hours and the Ibuprofen in between so that you are taking something every two hours

  • Hi Draper yes I stayed at the original hospital.

  • Thank you all for your advice. I wasn't given anything for constipation from the hospital but I've ordered movicol and lactilose from boots. I'm also taking the Ibuprofen at a different time to the others meds as Dani suggested and that has helped.
