Hi Everyone ,

I have a question and hoping someone will be able to help. My partner had cancer of mandibular and had surgery in May and they took bone and skin from he's leg to reconstruct the jaw and gums. He's currently nearly finished radio therapy actually 4 left and doing really well. He was having problems with hair growing in the mouth as skin was taken from the leg but since rt this is now all fallen out and he's really happy about this. Does anyone know if this will be a permanent thing or is there a chance it could grow back after treatment. We are hoping not as this has caused him the most grief.

  • Hi Bridget.
From what I read from others even without RT the hair in the transplanted bit of tissue disappears eventually. So the outlook is good.

  • Hi Dani , that's good and it was really bad before rt and was asking me to cut it which wasn't easy. Thank you so much for replying.

  • Good evening bridgetb, i had the same operation as your partner and have had no issues with my grafts or skin grafts mine was done in 2009 and everything has healed up well after the operation, and lead quite a normal life, its surprising how well the leg recovers from having part of the bone removed. Wishing you and your partner all the best during recovery, good luck.

  • P.S   I did not have radiotherapy after my operation as i had after my first one, and there were no issues with any hair growing, take care.

  • Hi Chris , thank you for replying. So you had radiotherapy after another lot of surgery. My partner had bowel cancer 6 years ago and had chemo tablets but this time the cancer was aggressive but he's doing well and now only has 3 rts left. The thing that has caused him the most grief is the hair in the mouth.

  • Hi Bridget

I had 35 treatments of RT 20 months ago on my right parotid gland

The hair stopped growing on the right side of my face and neck (so now I only have to shave one side)

    Hope this helps.
