Oral Irragators

Hi

Does anyone have any experience with oral irrigarors ?

My cancer is right side of tongue and right floor of mouth. Due to this I have lost part of the floor of my mouth and find small pieces of food get stuck in the cavity, even though i try my hardest to keep what very small amount of food i can eat to the left side.

Getting it out, even with a soft toothbrush etc, can be really sore/painfull, plus i really don't think digging around in it is a good idea anyway.

Rinsing doesn't always get rid of it and i'm not able to spit either, i have to let the excess water fall out.

I won't be using it as and alternative to cleaning them, but as an added extra after.

I have found one that has lots of settings, from very soft to a 'good blast' !

  • Hi Cat. I used one but found it too harsh. if yours has a slow speed and a wide nozzle it might be OK. Hope so.

  • Hi Cat I have a water pick with a very soft brush and I use Luke warm boiled  water in it with a little chlorhexadine or corsodyl alcohol free version it was trial and error to wpget the balance right. I only ever use it on the lowest setting to dislodge any food that won’t come out  in the area where my back wisdom tooth is on fully radiated side. I once hit the next speed it drew blood so be very careful.

  • Hi Cat

I use a water pic to clean out the hard to reach places where my denture is attached to the prosthesis in my upper jaw. It works really well. Initially I thought it would be too hard on the inside of my mouth and the hygienist gave me a syringe that I could fill with water to do the same job and would not be so hard on my mouth. That worked out O.K. but since then I have found the water pic does a better job. My surgeon and prosthodontist were very happy with the results from using it. The prosthodontist said now he would only have to take the denture out once a year to clean out behind them instead of 6 monthly. I only fill it with warm water and do not add in anything else. I thoroughly rinse it out afterwards as I don't want to pick up any nasties from it. There a few oops moments when I take it out of my mouth before I have properly switched it off and it ends up spraying all over the bathroom. I wear an apron when I use it as the water coming back out of my mouth often ends up down my front instead of in the basin as I can't spit either. I use it 3 times a day after I have washed my mouth out with foam swabs and cleaned my last remaining teeth. So far so good.

Best of luck with it I'm sure it will do the job well.

  • Hi Lyn

I plumped for getting the Hangsun water flosser, because of the low settings you can put it on and that is it portable.

I used it for the first time last night, i so wish i'd know about them and got one sooner, it's great. My mouth felt so clean after.

I used it on the softed setting, it was a little tender in the cavity, but it hooked out a piece of food, which probably caused the pain rather than the water spray.

I too had a few Ooops moments  Joy  I must remember to turn it on when the nozzle is in my mouth and off before i take it out... unless i want another face wash, in which case.. apply soap first !!

I did think about using a syringe, but i didn't think it would be powerfull enough to dislodge bits, also awkward to get to parts of the mouth inside.

I won't be with out it now.
