I have type 2 diabetes and living in Spain I get either Vegestart or Nestle Diabet Plus (neither of them available in the UK) but when I have visited the UK all that GPs offer is Ensure Plus (full of sugar). I'm returning to the UK to live and would like to know what diabetics are prescribed?
Fortisip make a compact protein which might be a better option?

Good evening theFrenchman, im sure there are other options here but i have always had Ensure Compact through a feeding tube which as you say is full of sugar. Your best bet is to ask to see a dietician who will be able to offer something for diabetics. Good luck.
Chris
Getting to see s dietician could take months sadly. Unfortunate that continental Europe offers do many alternatives for those who can't eat solids and the NHS so few.
"Fortisip Bottle contains 13.4 g of sugar compared to 12.32g as found in Ensure Plus Milkshake.".

Sorry you can’t find anything that the NHS can provide. Are you able to swallow? If you are the internet has lots of high protein low carb smoothie options.

But what the NHS offers is free so im just grateful that they offer me these, i don't know how the system works over in Europe. I know these supplement drinks are quite expensive. I agree that there are not very many savoury ones here which is a shame as it would be lovely to have an alternative but i suppose it's supply and demand. I have tried Aymes savoury ones that come in powder form, i think Chicken and vegetable are what they offer. Wishing you well.

As it happens both products I am able to get on prescription in Spain are both cheaper than Ensure. Think it highlights some of the reasons why the NHS is failing.
As i mentioned i dont know what happens in Europe and what standards they meet. The NHS has never failed me and because of there staff im still here 12 years after my first operation.
Im not doubting the standard of the care you received from the NHS just that it's financial difficulties need addressing and looking at spending on overpriced unhealthy products like Ensure should be looked at.
I don't know anything about the health systems in Europe or the U.K. but it sounds as though they are different to Australia where I live.Your health systems sound a lot more generous. I have to buy my own drink supplements but can only buy them from the supplier with a referral from my speech pathologist. There is no discounts and I have to pay full price even though I am on a full aged pension. The hospital did give me a 2 week supply after my last discharge from the Royal Adelaide Hospital which is a public hospital and that is the first time this has happened as I normally have gone to a private hospital as I am lucky enough to be able to afford to belong to a private health provider.
Having said that I am very grateful to the public system as they completed my reconstruction surgery free of charge although I had to pay some towards the denture but at a very reasonable rate. The cost if I had gone through the private system was prohibitive and I could not afford it. My oral maxillofacial surgeon and prosthodontist put a special case to Medicare which is the name of our public health system so I could be accepted to have the reconstruction done through them. I can't fault the care I have been given through the public system they have been great and I am very grateful to them.
Seems as though every country has a different system.
