Hi there, I'm new here. I'm 39 4 babies ex smoker who has just noticed a large swelling under the tongue which is actually protruding out over back teeth when I stick out my tongue. Doctor made urgent referral. It's painless and there is some lymph node involvement, mainly the ones under the chin. I'm praying it's just some kind of cyst or salivary gland issue, but I've got a terrible feeling, did anyone else's cancer start on the floor of the mouth? Thanks for listening x

  • I can’t help you with location as mine was at the base of my tongue. Waiting for a referral is really pants but hold onto the fact that 90% aren’t cancer. If you haven’t had an appointment in two weeks find out who you are being referred to and contact their secretary. I had to chase mine up.
It’s not a good thing to compare other peoples cancers and please stay off Google or you’ll end up down a rabbit hole. Keep busy and fingers crossed it’s something else.
    Best wishes

  • Ah thanks ever so much for the reply. The good thing is is that I feel amazing, and not losing weight etc. Yeah I'm gonna try hardest to stay off Google, it's the worst thing in the world and I've already planned my funeral lol. Fingers crossed I'm ok, and thanks for the advice on the secretary thing, I'll mak sure to chase it up. Xx

  • Hi mine was tonsil cancer. But best advise us keep off dr google as you have said you’ll frighten yourself  even more. The 2 week pathway is quickest way to be seen. Hold on to fact over 90 % referrals aren’t cancer but if you’re unlucky enough to join us head and neck cancers have an excellent success rate.

Plus keep busy but with 4 babies I reckon you will be kept busy.

  • Hey Hazel, yeah I've been a good girl today and kept away, best advice my partner gave me was, worry when you have something to worry about, so he is keeping me right. Oh yep. Hopefully the next 2 weeks will fly. X

  • Hi Gemzgg, as Dani and Hazel have said, 90% of referrals turn out not to be cancer, hopefully you will be within this 90%. If not, take comfort that these cancers are very curable, many on here are living proof of this. We are all here to help as much as we can, so any questions just ask away, someone will always answer if they can. Good luck with your consultation, try to keep positive. All the best.

    Regards Ray.

  • Ahhhh Ray, thankyou so much for that. I'll keep you all in the loop x

  • Good evening Gemzgg, my first cancer was floor of the mouth but my signs were an ulcer-like growth on my lower gum that would not heal up and became sore, mine was not big i could not tell which parts were affected it was not until they did the operation that they found a bit of my tongue was also affected along with lymph nodes. It really depends on what the scans, biopsies, etc come up with and then onto the operation itself unless they just try radio and chemo rather than operate. As Dani and your husband mentioned stay clear of Dr Google as it is so misleading and let the consultant give you his professional opinion, wishing you all the best for your appointment with fingers crossed for a good result. Take care.

  • Oh really, what were your symptoms? Xx

  • Hey Chris, thanks for the lovely reply. I've just read your bio, you've really been through the mill haven't you, yet you seem so positive, just amazing. I've been really good today and stayed off Google and it helps so much, haven't worried half as much today. I've no ulcer from what hat I can tell, only a swelling in the bottom of my mouth that's visible when I stick tongue out or lift it. The gland under my chin is hard and also visible when I swallow or eat. Such a strange thing for a tongue to swell, it could hav been like this for years and I didn't know x
