Hi everyone  Im 10 years post diagnosis and treatment for tonsil cancer almost to the day and I have just been put on the urgent cancer pathway for a possible tumour near my voicebox.  I was referred this morning and I have appointments for Monday (6 days time)   My question to you all is have any of you had a second cancer in an area very close to your first.  Mine is about one inch away.  Im worried that they might not be able to offer me the treatment I need because of all the damage the first lot of treatment did 10 years ago.  I am still suffering with the after effect of radiotherapy.  Any advice.?

  • Good evening Dee, my first cancer was in the floor of the mouth in 2008 where i had an operation followed by radio and chemo, a year later it returned to my lower jaw where i had more surgery and in 2010 i had to have my voicebox removed. Sometimes they can offer radiotherapy in a different area depending on your previous treatment but they would most probably opt for surgery. As you can see all my cancers were in the lower part of my mouth/neck and i only had radiotherapy once after my first operation. We are all different and your consultant will be able to give you a better idea of what and what cannot be done. Wishing you all the best for your appointment Monday, take care.

  • Hi Dee

Sorry to hear of your predicament. You would think that after 10 years that would be the end of it all. A re-occurrence is always a shock especially after so long.

Like you and Chris I have also had re-occurrences. My first diagnosis was in 2013 and then 6 years later in 2019 I had another cancer and then again in 2022 all in my jaw. Each time my wonderful team has been able to give me successful treatment and currently I am cancer free. I have had radiotherapy twice now and am unable to have any more as I have had my quota. I am living a happy and full life thanks to them.

I am sure that your team will come up with a successful treatment plan for you so don’t be disheartened. Let us know how you get on.

    Lyn
