Stomach peg and swimming

Hi, how have people found sea swimming and pool swimming with a stomach peg.

Also, anybody paddle boarding with one and wearing a wetsuit?

I'm being very optimistic that I'll be able to swim during radiotherapy but I can hope..once I've had the chemo bit and picc removed.

  • I hate swimming and never had a PEG but I think your attitude is wonderful ......I wouldn't try though. You will burn to some extent during RT and the chlorine will seriously aggravate it. After two weeks of radiotherapy I was really tired and after four I could only manage a slow turn round our field with the dog. I don't think I would have managed to keep myself afloat

You use your abdominal muscles to stay upright. The same ones the PEG goes through. Might it be jolly painful, dislodge the tube even?

  • Hi

I'm in my 4th week of radiotherapy (alongside chemo) and do not have the energy to go swimming.  I can just about take my dogs out for a bimble round the park!

I was told by my Oncologist that I couldn't have a bath with a PEG.  That swimming was off the agenda as there would be potential contamination /infection in the PEG.

However, your treatment may be different to mine and you may have more energy for some fitness that maybe, isnt water based.

    Good luck

  • Good evening , i have had a PEG since 2010 and once the area has healed up and the consultant is happy you should be able to have baths, and showers and should be able to go swimming as long as you are not restricting the tube by it being tugged or pulled. But i very much doubt if you will be allowed to go swimming during radiotherapy because of the skin and healing. Slowly does it , all the best.

How long did the PeG take to heal.  Mine is still oozing 3 months later.  I've had an assortment of dressings, from silver foam to currently salting the wound.  It's quite red and "over granulated" apparently.

I'd love a bath so would be happy to get this PeG sorted out.

    Thanks

  • Good evening Mellabs, mine healed up very quickly sometimes you can get yeast infections where the area is warm and moist. It should not be oozing after three months in normal circumstances, i have used Hydrocortisone cream for over granulation so maybe have a word with your Dr first. All the best.
