Hi all, just a little update for anybody interested,  and me to look back on!

Week 2 - nothing much to report other than everything tasted vile...still does! Things I learnt for me...do not use seasoning /condiments,  they taste like poison.  Eat different food types on one plate separately,  not mixed on one fork. Some things are worse than others ...baked beans are completely inedible Nauseated face I seem to be able to taste sweet things better, sadly savoury is rank!

Week 3 - First 2 days OK,  then it wasn't. Started on the pain meds, and by day 4 I could barely eat anything. Given Lidocaine lollipops for the ulcers on day 6 of week 3 ( side of tongue made it too painful)...complete game changer for me...just deadens the ulcers long enough for me to eat. Breakfast - oats with syrup, milk, jam or peanut butter and sometimes cream, dinner - soup, sometimes with buttered toast dunked, tea - pasta or rice or mashed potato ..sometimes with cheese or butter or cream. Random...little trifles/ choc mousse and such like with cream...tastes ok. Hot chocolate is the best hot drink for me, I can still kind of taste it's chocolate...but can't do very hot! Haven't lost too much weight so far, they weren't concerned anyway, so hopefully still OK tomorrow.

I have Caphosol and Gelclair... not sure why both?, paracetamol (various types..liquid, soluble,  etc) ,difflam , morphine and the Lidocaine lollipops. They don't say what to use so I just found what works the best for me...I  think!

Sleeping a lot which is OK...passes the time,  luckily my pets are really good and very patient with me. I have someone who walks my dog on days that I can't. The cats just have a warm body to sleep on! My boy cat keeps cuddling and kissing my face when I come back from RT??? Heart eyes cat

Constantly sipping water which helps massively with my throat...even though water is disgusting too.

It's gone quite quickly thankfully,  day 4 of week 4 already...another 13 treatments to go.

Hope you are all doing OK

Linda xxx

  • Lidocaine lollipops

Not heard of them. What a great idea if you are determined to keep eating.
Thanks for the update. It’s good to hear how folk are doing. You’re certainly managing to eat well.
By the fourth week I was on morphine and gave up eating entirely.
    Well done!!

  • Thanks Dani, I know there's still every chance I will need a tube, but I'm managing at the moment. Slight smile

  • Hi Hazel, thanks for that I wish they'd have told me. I have lots of ulcers, they are bleeding now. I've been using the Caphosol,  but I'll start using the Gelclair more Slight smile

  • If you have lots of ulcers please be careful with your local anaesthetic. It’s easy to cause damage if you can’t feel. Maybe that’s why some trusts don’t supply them

  • Hi Dani, this did occur to me as it was biting the ones on the side of my tongue that drew my attention to the ulcers. So, I don't have anything that needs chewing...its all 'slide down the throat' food. I also make sure it's only tiny amounts at a time so I don't choke. Thank you for pointing this out Slight smile

  • Hi  Linda no problem be careful with the  ulcers try applying the gelclair neat you May wince or scream a little but bear with ut if you can . Do not use  over the counter stuff like bonjela for a good year or so take it from me it hurts if yiu do. If you struggle with gelclair try diluting it in a glass with 39 mil of water. To be honest it will help but won’t cure the ulcers as radiation ones are a pain ut took me until around week 13 after treatment don’t want to out a downer on just being realistic. I found it easier knowing all possibilities.do watch the lidocaine as too much numbing like Dani says can cause f ire trouble. If you can’t maintain sufficient nutrition the n g tubes nothing to fear. It was  my lifesaver all medication hydration and  nutrition went via it. Then my mouth could deals with the treatment better. Remember pain killers as well

Absolutely. I’m glad I had one rather than a PEG. I vomited it up 5 weeks after treatment finished so just pulled it out of my nose and threw it in the bin. Had to eat then JoyJoy

    Sorry if TMI

  • Thanks Hazel, the Gelclair they have given me is to dilute in water and swish/gargle...no mention of putting on direct. I couldn't reach the ones at the back of my throat anyway. I've seen you and Dani mention before not to use anything not given by hospital,  so won't do that with things like bonjela or other mouthwashes.

I only really use the lidocaine on the ones on my tongue and I don't have food I have to chew.

The radiographer said last week, it will get worse so if I need a NG tube so be it,  I won't fight it. They know I am anxious about it because of a bad experience years ago, so think they are not forcing it. It helps hearing what you say though  so thanks for that.  I have my weekly clinical assessment tomorrow, so I'll see what they say and will do as I'm told Slight smile

  • Hi Linda you’ll get there. If you need it just treat ng tube as part of the treatment it’s there ti help you. Yes if you only take what they give you any issues are easier to resolve. Good luck for tomorrow
