I would have preferred to be going to a beer festival or something nice  instead of surgery but thats what needs to be done . It  will involve two surgeons and removing skin and an artery and vein from leg for my neck which they are going to take a lump out of . Apparently I will lose some type of  movement in shoulder but a small price to pay if it sorts the issue out. Anyone else here had similar please ?

  • Hi Min. Beer festival next year for you. Just trust the team. You’ve got this, can’t help with experience but here for you as always.

  • Thanks Hazel Yes indeed they are the experts . I just didnt realise it would be so full on. Well I suppose I have never had a serious operation except getting my tonsils taken out. Maybe the RT and Chemo were good practice for this I hope

  • I lost some movement from the second of my neck dissections.  It all depends on what they do to your accessory nerve - that controls the shoulder and runs through the site where they normally do neck dissections.  In my case they "upset" it my moving it rather than cutting it.

The result was that I could lift anything close to my body, but could not reach out to pick up a beer at arms length.  Physio and time (as well as a desire for beer Wink ) have solved that issue.  Took around 18 months before I realised I had got the movement back.  There may be some other effects relating to skin surface nerves - I can scratch my neck and it feels like I am scratching the top of my ear.  That is more amusing than life changing!

I would speak to your GP sooner rather than later to get some physio laid on.  I would also keep up on the painkillers especially if the movement hurts otherwise you may do more damage by trying to move the shoulder in an unnatural way to compensate for the pain.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks Peter I am not having a neck dissection just a huge lump taken out of my neck , OMG when he started drawing what he had to do , Its a fairly big operation but they do them the whole time so I will leave it in their capable hands and hope for the best and suppose prepare for the worse. He did say it was a no brainer having the operation and said it could come back as nothing which would be great

  • I know yours is a different op, but I suspect that the same nerve trauma may well happen as they are going in a similar place.  Hence saying what happened to me and the recovery timeframe.
