Hi there everyone. I thought I would ask on here if anyone can recommend a good private dentist. I know our teeth/mouths are so important and my dentist has just not been supportive at all. I cannot seem to make her understand how important any problems are with us after we have had radiotherapy treatment. I live near Chichester in West Sussex and if anyone can recommend someone that they go to who has experience with radiotherapy mouths I would welcome it. Thankyou
lizzie
Hi Lizzie. I can’t help with recommendations but I can agree that we seem to know more about our radiated mouths than our dentists. I know enough to make sure that any invasive treatment has to be referred to a dental hospital, that you can either use Duraphat OR a three monthly varnish but not both, that GCMI paste at night helps protect and reinvigorate enamel and that I need to see my hygienist every 3 months, my dentist 6.
It seems to do the trick for me. My dentist though is pretty good at making sure he is up to date.
I’ve told my hygienist that I am at risk of caries at the gum margin so she pays attention to putting on the varnish there as well as occlusal surfaces and my dentist knows to use the mist modern filling materials if needed as irradiated teeth need special care.
I hope you find somebody. I’ve had to educate mine but he’s taken it all in his stride and is an exemplary clinician.

Oh and PS. Your hospital dentist will work privately and will know others who are familiar with our problems. That might be a good place to start.

Hi Dani
thankyou for your full reply. I also understand all those basic things and I must say my hygienist is very good. I will mention to her that the fluoride varnish must be really applied to the gum line. That is a good tip. I have already approached My hospital dentist but she has not been forthcoming or kind at all. So I feel very alone with my teeth. I have had 2 minor gum infections in the pocket behind one of my back teeth. I have seen my hospital dentist 4 times with this snd she was unhelpful. My regular dentist refused to see me at all and just gave me antibiotics (which did work). I have just cracked a tooth/filling over the weekend and my regular dentist has again refused to see me as an emergency as I am not in enough pain and my face hasn’t swollen up. I said I cannot afford to let things get that bad!!!! They have no understanding at all. I have been recommended a very experienced dentist near London which I will contact, but I was just hoping for something a little nearer. Sorry to moan !

Heavens Lizzie. You have every right to moan. I’d look at the nearest cancer centre and see who their dentists are then Google them to see if they have a private practice. Why do some of us have to fight to be visible once the treatment ends ?
Do let us know if you find somebody

Hi Lizzie
I cannot help you for the area that you live. Some people are lucky and get excellent treatment from their NHS Dentist, unfortunately mine was not good, and all he seemed to want to do was tell me horror stories I know have a private Dentist and she is brilliant as his the hgeine team who clean my teeth. Good luck in finding someone x
