Hi everyone,

im 5 weeks in to chemoradiotherapy for tonsil cancer & my mouth is very swollen with lots of sores & ulcers.I’ve had to move to a fluids only diet as solids irritate my mouth too much. To ensure my nutrition stays at a suitable level I’ve been advised to drink 4 fortisips a day.
my question is; is 4 enough ? I’m male & 96 kilos). Can I drink more than 4 a day?

  • Hi Puliboy and welcome.
if you’re having nothing else you need 3000 calories so if you’re on the 200 ml 2Cal you need 7/8

I was having 6 at one stage but I’m a girl and quite little.
Hang on in there. Not long to go.

  • Hi Puliboy, congratulations on making it to this stage of the treatment and keep it up. I was a 82 kg male prior to RT/CT and had a RIG inserted at the outset. By your stage I was unable to take  anything orally and was taking 7 Fortisips a day via the tube. I did lose about 11 kgs, half of which I have regained since the end of Aug 2021.

Good luck for the rest of your care.

  • Good evening Puliboy, i have 7 Ensure Compact a day plus 3x 30 ml of Calogen , my weight is 10.5 stone and i have maintained this since 2010 although i have always been slim. I cannot see any problem in taking more than 4 as it does sound a bit low but maybe Fortisips contain more calories per bottle than Ensure the Calogen is also to help me maintain my weight. If you find it difficult swallowing the Fortisips then you could have an NG feeding tube fitted, i have a PEG feeding tube fitted and just syringe the 7 Ensures through this, It might be worth your while contacting your dietician especially if you are feeling hungry. All the best.

  • Hi Pulliboy1

4 Fortisips certainly does not sound enough if you are going to maintain your weight. I was recently on a nasogastric tube and could only have Fortisips. I was told by my dietician after she weighed me that to maintain my weight of 63 k.g I would need to have 6 Fortisips at 200ml a bottle at 3 hourly intervals with extra water flushes of 60-100ml as needed to keep the urine clear, straw coloured.

Can you check with your dietician again to see if she has taken into account that you are now only on fluids.

It does get a bit tedious having to time when you have to drink so often but thank goodness it will only be short term. You can get supplement drinks such as Fresubin with fibre in them  and that does really help the constipation situation. Maybe you can get Fortisip with fibre also. It would be worth looking into.

You're near the end of your treatment, hang in there.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks everyone. 4 didn’t feel like enough. We’ve reviewed it today and now the recommendation is 7. Thanks again everyone.

  • Great that you have a result. Best of luck, you're nearly there
