Hi and Good Evening all.
Firstly I’d like to ask is it ok for me to post on your group as I’ve not had a diagnosis yet. I am having a double tonsillectomy, a lesion removed from my right nostril and a Pandascopy this coming Friday 11th February. My journey started last year but due to ill health I didn’t actually see the ENT specialist until December 2021. I was in hospital 5 times last year with recurring bowel blockages and in September I woke from a operation with the most horrendous sore throat. Although never had that pain post operative I assumed it was because of the breathing tubes etc. Within 2 days I was prescribed a anaesthetic spray to use on the ward and my surgeon asked ENT to come and review me as a impatient. No ENT doctor came and my throat got worse, a blister looking lesion appeared on my right tonsil and days later a 6/7mm hole!! My glands were enlarged, my throat was red and my tonsil was changing. Atlast I seen ENT in December who ordered bloods, x-Ray, MRI and a ultrasound urgently. Fast forward till now the results confirmed a growth, 3 enlarged lymph nodes one either side of my neck and another on my thyroid. My right tonsil asymmetrical, yesterday I signed the consent forms at a pre-assessment and Tuesday I will have a Covid test before the above surgery on Friday. Things have been changing quickly, the main change being the size of my tonsil and a constant feeling of something stuck in my throat! My neck is very lumpy but then that’s been like it for a long time, way before the operation last year but I ignored any symptoms due to months worth of bowel problems! My head is all over the place right now and desperate for answers I’ve made very good friends with Google! Very scared and time seems to be going so slowly when all I want is answer. Has anyone had a similar experience? Could this be something else? Thank you all so much for your time. X

No it was a swimming cap for the plaster of parris to make a back piece which you lay your head into when you lie on the bench . It’s for Extra support and steadiness I think . I’m not sure every trust does that tbh ?

That’s really interesting. Never heard of a back rest. Where were you treated ?

Hi Peter
Im just quickly catching up on some messages and again I’m so sorry it’s taken so long to reply. I’ve not been talking things to well I guess, and now I’ve to make a huge decision and I have until Tuesday to decide. Surgery or radiotherapy. I noted you say you didn’t have radiotherapy, did you have surgery?
The Pet scan found a ‘hotspot’ on my cervix/bowel area so here we go again and it’s slightly delayed the tonsil Cancer. But ultimately the ‘extra’ week to think about things has delayed it more.
Avril
Hi Gaz, how are you today? You must be a couple of days into radiotherapy now? I had my appointment with the Oncologist Tuesday, actually 2 Oncologists! Put my head in a spin giving me 2 options, radiotherapy or Surgery basically. Surgery sounded horrific with laser surgery internally and a complete neck dissection on the outside. Both 70-80% survival rate if I get on with it now but I’ve taken another week to consider surgery or radiotherapy. The PET scan found another hotspot and that being cervical/bowel area. So things are moving quite quickly with that, had a ultrasound and today MRI and then tomorrow another. To be honest this is delaying my decision for a few reasons.
But right now I’m desperate to speak to someone who has had throat and neck surgery as well as radiotherapy.
I would love to hear how your getting on as your just a couple of weeks ahead of me

Hi Hazel
Many thanks for your link I’m just about to click on it, Maybe I’ll have questions after reading. Things for me have been slightly delayed because of 2 things… first being PET scan found a hotspot around my cervical/bowel area so that’s well underway test wise. Have another today 4:30 MRI then a transvaginal tomorrow. So I was given 1 week to decide what treatment was better for me, surgery or radiotherapy. Both they are saying is same success rate so I was completely sent in a spin when ‘offered’ a alternative. Surgery sounds horrific but I would be in high dependency with one to one care and strong medication but left with a 7inch cut as well as internal surgery to remove some of my throat my tongue and a complete neck dissection. But the positive being all going well I should recover allot quicker and they may get it ALL out. Radiotherapy obviously comes with its horrid side effects too not too mention a 50 mile round trip every single day for 45 sessions.
Im so lost Hazel, this decision I have to make with not any personal experience with any and having to make what could be the biggest decision of my life. I’ve found lots of advice on radiotherapy but zero about the surgery as everyone’s surgery I guess is tailored to them. Also if it’s confirmed I have another cancer how does treating 2 different cancers at the same time work etc. The head & neck oncologists have told me to try and park that as must crack on with tonsil cancer, but how can I?!!

Hi Avril
I had a neck dissection and robotic surgery to remove a tumour from the base of my tongue followed 6 weeks later with radiotherapy.

What I might ask would be are they going to do a neck dissection even if you are having radiotherapy? If they are then my decision would be to have surgery and keep RT back in case it recurred. Are you HPV positive? If you are then +be cancer responds to radiotherapy very well and tends not to recur.
If RT was going to be the sole treatment I would go with that.
Neck dissections carry some serious long term side effects too but intense physiotherapy overcomes most.
Most patients having RT recover very well.
