Hi. My name's Ian .in 2019. I had part of thyroid remove due to cancer.and on 9th November this year I did six weeks of radiotherapy.on my throat . plus time in hospital and Ng feeding tube fitted ..I've lost over a stone in . weight .the question is.what best is help get swallow back . because a moment my mouth is moist one minute then dry .and food pipe seems to stick to inside of throat.using nebuliser .and keeping room air moist but any other information and ideas would be great thanks
Hi Ian l welcome to,our small group. Yes radiotherapy causes dry mouth its the one side effect that can linger quite a while. I found soft foods think nursery type food with lots of gravy sauces and always had a warm or lukewarm drink to wash it down with. Sometimes the warmth if food makes a difference as well. Have yiu any ensure or fortisip high calorie food drinks inwas in 6 of those orally every day which gave me 1800 calories. That left me free to try to eat maybe poached eggs soggy weetabix ,soggy shepherds pie. I also had a nag tube for a total,of 6 weeks Have you been given swallow exercises from the s a l t team ? You really need to do those several times a day , I still do mine not as often but still do them.
I also drunk 2-3 litres of water to keep hydrated plus chew sugar free gum I used orbit wrigleys gum.At night time you can try xyimelts yiu buy online again I use 1/2 of one every night before bedtime.
Hope this helps Hazel

Hi.radioactiveraz.yeah they deit nurse.told me today and speech therapist to.try those drinks.and soups. But at minute this Ng tube keep making me feel sick when I feel it move when try to swallow .so it's as If i.m ABIT scared to try and swallow anything until pain ease.but I know in that case I will be back in hospital
Hi Ian are you checking your p h levels ? Before you feed ? I had to feed little and often our tummy’s domshrink with us not eating regular meals. I found standing up to feed some days easier than sitting. If you think your tube has moved you need to get in touch with your cancer nurse asap. If it’s just uncomfortable maybe try to drink the high calorie drinks orally ? You can buy complan I know a few in here who used that to increase calories.
sorry you’re in this position hope you get an answer

Hi Ian. What analgesia are you on. Did you start RT in November or finish then? My guess is you must have finished just before Christmas? What are you taking down your NG tube as far as food goes?

Hi.beesuit.yeah I started on 9th november.did 6 weeks . monday.to.friday.of radiotherapy.and it ended on 20 th of December. Food at min is none by Ng tube cos as i.m having to sleep lifted up on sofa soon as I put food on / or try to lay back a little it feels as if the tube is touching something in my throat.which is just making me cough all the time.i.m using neb.day.and night .and using false salva spray but just don't seem to be working any.of it
Contact your team to check tube placement. I was pump fed by NG over night and had absolutely no problem with it apart from as you say having to sleep upright. I got used to that.

It’s still really early for you. Your saliva will thicken and get quite troublesome and just needs spitting out. Proper analgesia is more important at this stage. Ask your team for some Gelclair mouthwash. It can be used neat or dissolved in water.
There is a product called antacid with Oxetecaine with you can sloosh round your mouth gargle and swallow. The local anaesthetic helps you swallow.
It will be a good few weeks before your mouth settles down.
