Hello

Im in the middle if my 5th week Radiotherapy and my mouth is really sore with mucositis any tips on how to treat or relieve symptoms

Thanks

  • Hi Diffiam can help it didn’t work for me but worth trying on script. Gargle with  saltwater and baking powder. Soda water can help ti break it up or if you can try flat Diet Coke or flat dry ginger. Do you have a nebuliser? If so I used mine up to 6 times a day. You can try steaming over a bowl of water with a towel over head. I used to use copious amounts of tissues and  not pleasant spitting. If you are getting ulcers gelclair is good again on prescription.
It’s one if the early side effects of our treatment which can be replaced with dry mouth so watch for that

Later in recivery I was given carbusistine to try and  thin the mucositis it did help. But it did go as quickly as it came.

Remember once treatment finishes the treatment continues to work for several weeks at least. Fir many of us it was a bit longer. 6 weeks after  can be a turning point.

    Best wishes. Hazel

  • Hi wopsan, Mucositis is practically unavoidable . I had it pretty bad with all my throat and the side of my tongue looking like one big blister. Keeping your mouth as clean as you can helps. Hazel has mentioned Gelclair but I had Caphosol too which is supposed to have a protective effect on mucositis. I found more morphine took the edge off it. Best wishes
