Hello

Ive just completed week 4 Radio and ive had 2 chemo sessions mouth very sore!!!!!!!

Im still able to eat soft diet soups custard rice pudding etc

Ive started producing a lot of saliva is this normal?????

Thanks

  • Hi

Yes you will start getting  lots of thick saliva that seems to defy gravity.

Using a nebuliser or steaming your head over hot water helps as does drinking lots and I'm afraid spitting it out. Sometimes I had to rake it out with my fingers....yuk!!

It does go to be replaced with a dry mouth but even that improves over time.

    Keep going

    Best wishes

  • Good evening Wopsan, well done on getting this far and still managing to eat a soft diet, yes im afraid this is quite normal  and it depends from person to person, thankfully mine was not to bad , a lot of is caused because the ability to swallow becomes less so you can get a build up, you could ask your consultant for a mild mouthwash that can sometimes help break it down. The sore mouth is due to the radiotherapy burning the inside of the mouth sometimes causing ulcers or blistering, as Dani said "keep going". Take care.
