Hi,

I'm currently in week 5 of 6 chemo-radiation and now developing a sore mouth with with ulcers.  I've tried Gelclair and it doesn't seem to be very effective, has anyone any other suggestions?

I'm also using difflam and calphasol mouthwashes and taking paracetamol and oramorph for pain relief

  • Hi Weejay. Its a bad time isn't it!

Some people get some relief with bicarb mouth washes and if you can stand it swishing your mouth out with oramorph before you swallow can be effective...Nothing will heal those ulcers except time so for the moment it's just pain relief.....but it does get better

There is also a product called Antacid with Oxetecaine which is like gaviscon with local anaesthetic. I found that helped me a little. You could ask your RT team for that to try. Best of luck

  • Hi Weejsy I’m afraid to say Dani us right for a time it’s all about the  pain management. My biggest ulcer hi g around fir about 23 weeks on full length of my tongue I did have the  oxcetecaine which did help to sip or swallow. Our treatment is pretty brutal and the ulcers are one of the side effects. As time passes there are other thjngs you can use but your mouth is too sensitive at midnight Ute tk try   Just keep on using the gelclair and msybe try oranurse toothpaste it’s gentler.

  • Hi Weejay

The only other thing I tried, but check with your team was gargling dispersible aspirin and spitting out. The ulcers were one of my biggest problems. Hope you find some relief, nearly there!

  • Hiya

I didnt really find anything that worked other than morphine, i used to spray difflam before trying to eat my fortisip, but im not sure it helped to be honest

I tried to ensure i timed my morphine around eating.

It does get better- good luck!
