It will be 2 weeks since treatment tomorrow but no changes yet.  Still swelling, no taste, just drinking water really.  Sleeping slightly better.  Where are others at this stage so far please.

  • Same as you. Six weeks before I came out of the fog. 12 weeks was a real turning point. My taste wasn’t anywhere near anything till about six months. Two steps forward and one step back. Introducing new foods slowly and one at a time to avoid trashing my mouth. I ate a steak at 12 weeks but couldn’t really taste it.
I’ve  just had a curry and I can feel a small ulcer inside my lower lip. That hasn’t happened for months. We are all different and need to go at our own pace.
At 2 weeks the cumulative effects of RT are peaking so early days

Hang on in there. Slowly slowly

  • Hi Carran,

Still had swelling for a good few weeks. Was still just dipping water at your stage  I was still really out of it, lost a whole week somewhere between the naps. I naively thought I would get better very quickly at this point, about week 3 I started drinking Ensure again.

Eating lots more now 6 months on. Managed curry this week. Still keep Caphosol to hand, helps with the blisters, not had any for a few weeks.

One day at a time, then suddenly weeks, then months have gone by.

    Sending hugs, Ronnie x

  • Hi Carren.   I just finished treatment last Friday so I sm very interested in anything people say to you if that’s ok   I am very tired but can still eat weetabix with protein powder and jelly snd cream  I sm on a lot of morphine so that makes me feel jittery   I too have ulcers  I only use Asperin rinse at moment  what else shall I ask for? Good luck Carren   Best wishes    Lizzie

Ask for Gelclair. It’s a godsend. Can be used neat on ulcers or diluted as a mouthwash. Caphosol is good too but the jury is out whether it actually works. It helped me.

  • Hi Carran

just thought I would reply to you again as I am around 2 weeks after treatment so you are around 3 I think?   I was just wondering how you are getting on?    I have been sleeping bit better snd I think mouth is bit less swollen. I have decreased pain meds as feeling so awful on them and that has helped my mood.  I can only sip water around taking my meds snd eating my jellies or weetabix.  All v slowly.  V v tired as well.  Lots sleeping in daytime.  How r you doing this week?   All the best.  Lizzie

Hi Lizzie.  I'm day 20 post radio.  Far less tired last week than this week but still have slumps. I went for a dog walk yesterday and felt more energised for the rest of the day. I can drink water and coke.  I've tried mashed veg twice this week but the neck pain afterwards is just not worth it.  I don't feel ready to keep trying with the pain.  I might try room temp custard tomorrow. I haven't reduced pain meds yet. Keep me posted Lizzie.  I'm feeling down with it.

  • It does feel like a slog doesn't it Carran but it's great that you're trying just a few things.   It's such early days still.

Well done for getting out for a walk.  Very gradually you'll find things start to get just a little easier.  Some days will be better than others.  Listen to your body and pace yourself.  We don't all recover from side effects at the same rate.

Good luck with the custard trial.  It was one of the few things I could manage a little of.

  • Hi Carran you just have to have whatever goes down easy. Nothing tasted nice for me not even water , Just keep trying different things , Milk shakes made with oat milk bananas blueberries and ice cream were something I got started on and still have most mornings , All the best regards Minmax
