no taste!

I finished my radiotherapy on Wednesday (30 sessions plus chemo) There have been a few hiccups along the way but on the whole I have done really well.
Struggling a little bit now though. This may sound silly but I knew that this next couple of weeks will very possibly get worse. In my head, I had equated this with feeling 'poorly', or tired or suchlike. Unfortunately, it's side effects that get worse isn't it?!
I am very lucky to have eaten all the way through but it now seems to be my taste that is going / just about gone and I'm finding it hard to get my head round it! It has been off for a while but this is a new level. Marmite -no taste, stilton - no taste, mint sauce - no taste!! The trouble is, I love food, it's so sad. I know things could be much worse but
Is this going to go on for ages?? I do need to lose some weight so it might help with that but would prefer something less drastic! Or any tips for foods that might still have some flavour?
Like I said, apologies to those of you that do have it much worse but any help would be uch appreciated x
  • Thanks Ronnie,

Funny enough I fancied sugar puffs the other day but couldn't taste them.  My go to at the moment is cauliflower cheese with brown sauce, can get a bit of taste from that plus the texture is lovely.

Just not a good time to have been a comfort eater!!

  • Yeah sod it! It will get better. I’ve had two pints in a lovely  pub and a home cooked curry in the camper followed by a Twirl for pudding. Heart️Heart️

  • Thanks so much Linda.

As I said to Dani I think I have just hit a bit of a low at the moment. I think partly from maybe not having the best relationship with food before and using it for comfort, which obviously I can't do now.  Missing going out and about and doing 'normal' things, though doing a tiny bit more now. Missing a nice hot cup of tea. Very woe is me in fact!!

Bought myself a second hand sewing machine today for a new very doable distraction hobby!! Doing to put music on and play with that, just trying to concentrate on what I can do!! Possibly a bit impatient too?!?!

  • Thanks loftyboy, it means so much having this support x

  • That's funny, have been viewing camper vans like some sort of middle aged pornography, one can dream!!

  • It's a phenomenon that, unless you've experienced it, you can't really comprehend so feeling low is completely understandable.  It will improve though Julie.

Might be watching you on Sewing Bee next year then.......

  • Julie that is hilarious

    You really made me laugh.
My mother taught me to tailor.
Have a good evening with that sewing machine Xx

  • Julie - that must be one of the unwritten side effects of a H&N cancer...  We've been looking and thinking about getting one after 25 years of not having one

  • Best thing we ever did. Upgraded the camper to a motor home just after I had RT. Told husband not to in case he had to go on holidays in it on his own JoyJoy
