I’ve now developed dysphasia and awful burning sensation in mouth thus is more a problem after eating , my jaw now clunking which I’ve never really noticed before , but my Max fax team assured me this is not from surgery , they have asked me to think about taking gabapentin or another drug similar , also a mouth guard mentioned , I’ve lost 2 stone now as struggling with my eating due to discomfort and dysphasia nothing g can be done for my narrowing as they feel not to bad but to just be careful as I’m at risk from choking , I’m not to worried about this now as eat small amounts and usual soft diet and drink with eating to help , it’s just the burning , I so fed up of feeling uncomfortable , and know medications may help just worry about the medication , can anyone help who may be in these medications and iits worth a try x

  • Hi Tracy and welcome to our community. I think you mean dysphagia?
Re the burning mouth. If your doctors are suggesting gabapentin then they must reckon it’s neuropathic? I have a friend who tried various medications before they found the right one

I’m sorry I don’t know any more about it but I’m sure others will come along with some experience particularly with your swallowing problem.
    Best wishes.

  • Hi Tracy

I am in a similar surgical position to you although they aborted my glossectomy after 2 hours...

As Dani says Gabapentin and similar drugs block the nervous signals to the brain.  I've not personally had them but my uncle who had an above knee amputation was on them long term and they seemed to work for him with no real side effects.

I've not suffered with swallowing like you seem to have although I do find it uncomfortable sometimes - a bit like the food is to big for my throat no matter how small a piece I take.
