  • Hi Cissy. Welcome to the community.
I see from another post that your husband is on morphine. This really slows gut motility so you get constipated. We usually get laxatives if we are on morphine. Laxido or Movicol are the usual ones. I was in laxido and took two a day. His team should provide it on prescription but you can get it OTC.

  • Sorry to hear this. It’s the last thing you need on top of everything else.

Instructions on the Movicol box say to drink up to 8 sachets within 6 hours for impacted constipation. I did this and it worked really well within about 4 hours. I now take 4 sachets spaced across  each day to keep it at bay while I’m using Oramorph.

  • Hi Cissy  .I too was on  on morphine and took laxido daily , like Mark el says  if husband is compacted you can take up to 6-8 in a day m then keep on top of them I was given laxido or movicol hope you get  him sorted quickly.MSorry to hear that primary has now been found ,but everything x that surgery sorts him out .

  • Hi cissy

Constipation is familiar to all of us that have regularly used morphine, and can be incredibly painful

As others have said laxido does work, but dont use it re-actively as it takes time to kick in, take it every day even if not constipated (2 a day worked for me) and if compacted its 6-8 within a short period of time.

  • Hi Cissy, i have been taking lactulose for quite a few years on and off and it has always worked for me , im not sure if its the same as the other laxatives that have been mentioned. I just wish they made it so it tastes better. Best wishes.

    1. Cissy sorry to hear about your husband...I too spent months on morphine so had crippling constipation...Laxido or Movicol are what I had but I had too up the dose.. eventually I had to remain within four feet of the toilet if you know what I mean...good luck
