Duraphat, SLS and ulcers.

I fear that the jury may be out on this one, but has anyone here changed their Duraphat 5000 toothpaste to one without SLS? And if so, what was it and did it make any noticeable difference!

  • No jury here. SLS is known to cause ulcers in sensitive mucosa. It took me 18 months before I could use Duraphat. I used Oranurse instead. Every time I tried Duraphat in three days I had a painful mouth; back to Oranurse and everything was ok in two days. Even now I have to have a weeks break now and then. I can use Oralieve which has no SLS but has a mild mint flavour or  Oranurse which has neither SLS nor flavour.
    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks Dani and Hazel. So, are we expected to use it indefinitely after RT treatment?
One of the many drawbacks of the Covid situation has been the lack of face to face time to have these things explained.
I’ve got it on prescription so getting it is not a problem. I just wonder what it’s doing to my mouth.

  • Hi MarkEL I use it 2 times a day and am not a big fan to be honest. Something I saw on U tube which made sense was rinsing your mouth before eating as the last thing you want for your food is an obstacle course. When I wake in the morning I do wonder should I rinse or brush teeth first  but then again if I eat I will have to brush my teeth again and then there is using the dental sticks which Ideally should be done before brushing as you cannot rinse. All The Best Regards Min

  • Hi yes I was told because if possible damage done I would be using duraphat high fluoride for ever. Plus I now have 3 monthly fluoride varnish done at dentist. Because if covid having to pay privately for dental treatment. You aren’t supposed to rinse the duraphat toothpaste I still brush after every meal as Jack if full saliva causes damage to our teeth. My saliva is almost 95% there but still wake with sticky mouth in a morning.
Any questions just ask we are only too pleased to help espy with you all not getting same after care as we did.
plus use interdental brushes snd floss once a day. Oral care you get into a routine with it.

  • Hi Mark. Duraphat is lifelong. I have had a three monthly fluoride varnish for 18 months now.
Like I said. The irritation does  go and you will be able to use it. I just have to have a rest from it now and again.
Brush teeth before breakfast with SLS free toothpaste. That way you get rid of overnight plaque which your breakfast gets going on while you are eating.
After breakfast there is no need to brush. Simply rinse, floss and fluoride mouthwash.
use your Duraphat 30 minutes after lunch and dinner.
Before bed a really good paste is GCMI paste plus which has Recaldent to remineralise your teeth while you sleep.
It sounds a real chore but you get into a routine
