Hello

I am looking for some suggestions on what can alleviate the thick mucus that is in the mouth.  I have finished 32 of 35 radiation treatments and 7 chemotherapy treatments for squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth.

i take 1200mg mucinex and have a suction machine but am looking for suggestions.

Thank you!

  • Hi valsvision and welcome to our community. Are you in the USA?

Mucinex active ingredient is Guaifenesin. There is a drug called Carbocysteine that some people here in the UK use. It might be better so it's something to run past your RT team while you are still seeing them daily.

A nebuliser may help too. I managed by sitting over a bowl of hot water with a towel wrapped round my head.

Keeping your bedroom warm and putting a humidifier on a bedside table can be beneficial too.

Add drinking lots....and I mean 3 litres a day...goes quite a way towards thinning the mucous too.

It's a horrid thing to cope with but it doesn't last long. By three weeks after treatment mine just suddenly went to be replaced with the dry mouth we all have to contend with to some extent permanently.

    Best wishes for your recovery.

I'm sure others will pop on with their advice as it's an almost ubiquitous problem.

  • Hi congratulations on almost completing treatment. I was prescribed carbusistine and used a nebuliser. We are all different mine  went around week 8 of treatment to be replaced with dry mouth.
One tip after treatment the radiotherapy keeps on working for several weeks just advising you.
    good luck

  • The nebuliser helped me a bit, but to be honest it was a major problem for about a month (at one point I felt I was choking.on it) then it just disappeared.

  • Hi TrevW , What did you find the best  mouth routine , I wake up brush teeth with duaphat  or make 1/2 of salt and Bicar and soda  mouthwash mix depending how bad mouth is. I do you that Diffalm mouth wash which can help with eating , Or just cracked this new bottle of white gear 10lm which you keep in mouth then  swallow and then can eat 15 minutes later. Only tried the morphin 7ml once and did the job can't remember where i left the bottle now All the Best Regards Min

  • Hi Minmax

I used duraphat religiously, but to be honest the only spray that helped with pain early on was my difflam, which i used literally after every sip of fortisip.

I used so much i ended up having to buy loads myself as well as the prescription.

After a month or two when dry mouth became a bigger issue than mucus i did find the boots mouthwash (dry mouth expert) and glandosane to be excellent sprays.

  • Hi TrevW Many Thanks Watch this space off to bed now RT in the morning All the Best will check out what meds I have to hand tomorrow  lol Regards Min

  • Hi TrevW I paid for  a prescription exemption card as on a load of heart tablets , Its like 10 payment of £10 odd for a year  and obviously saved me a fortune , Someone mentioned this but  apparently prescriptions are free for 5 years with cancer. Just as well because mine expires mid Feb All the Best Regards Min

  • Hiya minmax

You should get prescriptions free now and should be able to get a free exemption card, i would speak to your GP about it, i did mine through the GP.

The reason i bought difflam privately was simply that the amount i was prescribed didnt keep up with how much i was using, and i only saw the consultant every two weeks. Really i should have asked for a bigger prescription, i just bought it to get rid of the hassle

Hope your radio wasnt too bad!

    Trev

  • Thanks Trev Yes all going well in a fashion lol Hope its all going well in recovery mode All The Best Regards Min

  • Minmax. You can buy Benzydamine generic which is cheaper and decant it into a small spray bottle. It goes further that way.
