Rang the RT bell today!

Session 30 of 30 fractions (of 65 Gy) completed at lunchtime today. Phew!

It’s been a long journey, alongside 5 chemo sessions, but I have done it and I have rung that bell! I now have see how long it’ll be before the RT stops working and I start to heal.

For those of you starting out, everyone’s cancer is slightly different and therefore everyone’s journey is different. The worst part for me was not knowing what side effects I’d end up getting from the myriad listed.  In the end, sore throat, total loss of taste, dry salty mouth and radiation burns have been the worst for me. I managed to eat throughout and controlled the pain quite well with paracetamol and ibuprofen throughout the day with the odd slug of Oramorph in the night if the pain woke me up.

It’s not been easy by any stretch of the imagination, but it also wasn’t quite as bad as I was expecting it to be either.

Keep at it. It is worth it!

HPV+ SCC of the right tonsil. t1 n1. Robotic tonsillectomy including neck dissection in October 2020 followed by 65 Gy in 30 fractions of radiotherapy and 5 concurrent weekly chemo sessions ending 2nd January.

  • Hi Mark. Well done. It’s a great felling having got to the end. I hope you trashed that bell. Have you taken your mask home?
Keep well and get on top of recovery.
Keep drinking and look after your teeth with a religious fervour and you’ve nailed it.

  • Hi MarkEl Well done you on finishing  the course. I  hope the next stage is ok.  All The Best Regards Min

  • Thanks All.

Sadly, Gail, it’d be a total waste of good Champagne as I can taste bugger all! But I appreciate the sentiment.

Yes Dani. I brought the mask home. It’s still in the boot of my car while I decide what to do with it. We could do with a ‘101 Uses for an Ex-Radiotherapy Shell’ section in here perhaps?

Min, I hope your second week has gone well and you’re still feeling ok.

  • Thanks MarkEL Yes not bad ,but starting to slow down on my drinking as could usually drink a pint no problem

  • Lots of people pimp them. I’m terrible no imagination but I’ve seen some great ones.

  • Just want to say gratz on finishing treatment! I am really glad symptoms were manageable

  • Thanks Trev. Fingers crossed, but eating has got harder even just today due to pain on the side of my tongue. If I numb my throat before eating it’s not too bad but I just hope it doesn’t get much worse else it’ll be a Fortisip diet for me till things improve again.

  • Hi Mark el excellent news ,now try and chill out if I can give yiu one word of advise your body’s at maximum radiation levels so hydrate hydrate and even more aim for 2-3 litres of water every day and nutrition 1800-2500 calories a day .The radiation has to leech out slowly as it’s still working at max output for the next few weeks if you are  lucky, many take longer. The champagne s a nice idea but even now at 28 month post treatment is more than my mouth can take .The odd alcohol free beer goes down ok , but as we always say we are all different. any help just shout !
