Hi all. So good to find this group. I'm due to have surgery on my tongue on 19th Jan. Absolutely terrified by the long surgery and hospital stay of 10 days. Was not expecting this. Also concerned that as I will need an intensive care bed post op. My op will be cancelled at short notice if there's not an ICU bed available. Has anyone else experienced this during the pandemic. Regards
Hi Mrs Badger Welcome . I have been in and out of hospital for the past few weeks with no issues whatsoever. Covid test came back negative today. Back there tomorrow and until the end of january am I bothered not at all , just want to get my treatment over and done now .All the best Regards Min

Hi Mrs Badger and welcome to our little community.
Now that you’re in the system I’m sure your treatment will be safe. The hold ups have been for diagnosis. Our cancers are classed as aggressive so your surgery won’t be cancelled as it is urgent. ( but not so urgent that it has to be done yesterday)!Ask your cancer nurse for some clarification to put your mind at rest
There have been some tweaks to normal procedures in some hospitals but these mainly involve radiotherapy and chemotherapy which are being delivered in a more time economical way.
Good luck.

Hi. I was worried too, but oddly fascinated by the whole process. I even got my surgeon to take pics mid operation which he has shared with me!
What I’d been told was likely a four hour operation suddenly turned into 10 when they discovered that the tumour in my tongue was larger than anticipated.
I’m mid 50s, with asthma & arthritis and am not “fit” by any stretch if the imagination, but came through the operation fine.
I had my operation Oct 5th. Because of Covid, I was allowed NO visitors, but started off in High Dependency for 24 hours and then I did get a single room! In many ways, I was quite glad that my husband didn’t get to see me in the state I was in.
I lost 1/2-2/3 of my tongue with a flap from my calf. Left neck dissection at the same time. I had a NG tube placed at the same time (not as bad as it sounds/feels) which came out after 9 days and I was home after 12.
Even tho they removed 6 teeth on one side, I managed to move through the stages and was eating steak and chips a few weeks ago.
There was a suggestion that my operation might be delayed because it was longer than anticipated & because my tumour was growing aggressively. At that stage we would have paid to have had it done privately if they had not managed to move things around at the last minute. The important thing is to get it DONE with as little delay as possible to avoid any potential spread.
take care anc I’ll answer any questions I can possibly help with.
I had my surgery at the end of September, ( neck dissection, tumour, gum, bit of bone and 4 teeth removed “flap” taken from wrist to fill the hole!) so 9 hour op and overnight in icu....and 10 days in hospital......did not expect any of that so was really concerned too, but it was all good, the Luton and Dunstable hospital, not our local so more concern , I think they always say it might be cancelled so hopefully not, COVID was rife then but it wasn’t a problem, tests were taken and no visitors etc , it’s normal to be concerned and worried but I’m sure it will all be better than you think, good luck, hope it goes well x
