Halfway, but mouth is a mess and my mouth just tastes of salt!

Just wanted to mark 15/30 RT (16 tomorrow because 4 next week, Christmas Day off).

Inside my lower lip is a seething and occasionally bloody mess and there’s mucositis in most places now.

Cocodamol and my first sip of Oramorph has made me constipated, despite using Laxido on top of Docusate and the veriesr taste of a Strawbery yoghurt has set my mouth alight

Even dilute Difflam stung like buggery but weirdly, artificial saliva seems to have helped - possibly balancing the pH? My saliva is getting a little thick and tastes like it’s been quadruple salted.

Just need a bit if a whinge really, but over 1/2 way through “treatment” at least!

  • Hi MarkEL suppose to be starting first Chemo tomorrow if they can get me on a ward because its a Sunday apparently . But having RT anyway. The mask will never be an issue after spending 30 minutes for that MRI scan. Had my covid test yesterday morning came home to do a video call with Chemo nurse.  She was going on about it being difficult treating anxiety while on Cisplatin ?  God knows why she would mention that .  Then she told me I had to go to hospital for blood test lol . Well covid came back negative so thats the main thing All the Best Min

  • It sounds very similar to my regime, not surprisingly.

Covid swab Monday before RT, bloods Tuesday before RT and Chemo on Weds before dashing to RT and jumping the queue so they can do it as quickly as poss. Thursday and Friday are relatively straightforward normally, depending on any delay on the machines.

I was on Cisplatin to start with but when I told them on week 2 I’d been getting bad tinnitus they immediately changed it to Carboplatin. Good thing is it only takes one hour rather than five hours, cos I don’t need to be pumped full of so much fluid before and afterwards, but I think it’s the second choice drug so may not be quite so effective. It’s just a couple of % points but every one counts in my book! So mixed feelings.

I’m glad you’re managing. I’ve found it’s gone quite quickly actually. I’m in tomorrow as Christmas Day it’s closed, so I’ll be into single figures after that.

Keep that mouth nice and clean, keep taking on the calories and keep up the daily walking. I know we’re all different and may react differently but every bit helps and those things have certainly helped hugely get me to this point. Apart from the lack of taste and sore throat, which I manage with paracetamol, ibuprofen and mouthwashes I still feel quite well. I’m fully aware that this is likely to change in the next four weeks or so, but I’m enjoying it while I can! Plan for the worst and hope for the best!

Oh, and remember you may need to take Laxido (aka Movicol) or something similar, after chemo. Mine was on prescription but you buy the exact same stuff OTC. I was caught out totally and it wasn’t nice on top everything else to be worrying about! Worried

Here is to next week. M

  • Thanks MarkEL all the best for next week. In the scheme of things everything has gone fine and now just have to deal with the treatment lol. As you say Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Regards Min

  • Nope - despite me seeing this everywhere. They insist on Tellodont - the pink stuff you get at the dentist.

  • Ive found that a cup of hot water in the morning helps loosen and dilute the mucous making it easier to get rid of it as quickly as possible.

  • Yes I heard to rinse your mouth before eating as it gets rid of the obstacle course in your mouth  you food has to take otherwise

  • And upping your fluid intake helps loosen the gunk. I was encouraged to try for 3 litres a day.

  • No apologies please Wink

I don’t think cisplatin causes constipation that commonly but the drugs they give you for nausea and vomiting might.
