Halfway, but mouth is a mess and my mouth just tastes of salt!

Just wanted to mark 15/30 RT (16 tomorrow because 4 next week, Christmas Day off).

Inside my lower lip is a seething and occasionally bloody mess and there’s mucositis in most places now.

Cocodamol and my first sip of Oramorph has made me constipated, despite using Laxido on top of Docusate and the veriesr taste of a Strawbery yoghurt has set my mouth alight

Even dilute Difflam stung like buggery but weirdly, artificial saliva seems to have helped - possibly balancing the pH? My saliva is getting a little thick and tastes like it’s been quadruple salted.

Just need a bit if a whinge really, but over 1/2 way through “treatment” at least!

  • Well done. A landmark   indeed. All sounds very similar and expected I'm afraid. Speak to them about the constipation they may be able to give you something stronger. Hold on in there !

  • I’ve taken 6 sachets if Laxido in the past 30 hours plus Docusate - and nothing. Will try Dukcolax too tonight

Any thoughts about how saliva pH changes?

  • I had crippling constipation too. It’s been almost the worst aspect of the whole saga for me so far.

On the Laxido box it says to take up to 8 sachets within 6 Hours if it is impacted, which mine clearly was. I got up to 6 sachets in 4 hours and it started moving on its own and by next morning I was pretty clear. Such a relief!

Whatever you do don’t sit there straining or you risk a hernia which is the last thing you want especially at the moment. It’ll do it by itself eventually. Laxido really is great stuff.

Well done on reaching half way. A real milestone. You can start counting down now Blush

  • HinPanch Mark EL has pretty much summed it up  take up to 8  laxidos as per instructions  ph levels do change  constantly ,I was told to try and maintain neutral by gargling with baking powder 1 teaspoon in glass of lukewarm water.

congratulations on half way , cant say it gets better from here but at least end of treatment is in sight .Hydration is vital I aimed for 2.5-3 litres of liquid every day it also helps thin the dreaded mucus.

  • Once you’re in the clear with constipation take the laxatives prophylactically. When I got morphine I got laxido too. Charmingly my oncologist and nurses always asked how my bowels were after they weighed me, chastising me if I wasn’t going every day ( too much info, sorry)

pH decreases as lactobacilli take over normal flora and salivary flow reduces. There is research to show that after a year the pH starts to rise again

  • Keep at it Panch you are over the hump. I spoke to my RT nurse yesterday and she said 1/2  bicarbonate and salt in warm water and to make up a bottle and rinse at least 4 times a day. That will be something to look forward to for me lol All the best Min

  • Yes, I use the bicarbonate of soda solution too. Apart from the usual lack of taste, an ulcer on my lip and the dryness at night it’s worked a great so far (4 weeks in today.)

  • Hi MarkEL You stick with it as doing great . I am  sure the nurse said salt and bicarbonate of soda in warm water. I did watch a thing on utube where people who did the regular  rinsing were able to eat through sometimes and got far less mouth  sores. All the best Min

  • Yes a good four finger pinch of salt and the same of bicarb in a half tumbler of water. Works well.
What you don’t get told is that the better nick your mouth is in the less chance there is if bad mucositis so if you have time before treatment starts fix it. Brush before and after breakfast with Duraphat. Floss with every brushing and get going with interdental brushes. Make your mouth squeaky clean and toughen up your gums before the onslaught.
