Hi All

Diagnosed last year with Mouth Cancer, had surgery, chemo and radiotherapy. Have been in recovery since end of November. Recently found it difficult to open mouth, sore tongue, anyone else experience this?

  • Trismus is a well known late side effect

It’s well worth keeping your jaw exercises up after treatment

However, I wouldn’t be happy with anything short of getting my oncologist to have a look. It might be worth your while to phone up and bring your next check up forward explaining you are suddenly in pain again.
It may be nothing but only your doctor can tell you

  • Hi there. Beesuit is quite right - get onto your team. You at least need a telephone appointment and if necessary they can see you to check out the difficulty opening and soreness.

I had recurrent oral thrush for months after treatment - classically a sore tongue or roof of mouth, so that is possibility what you have. Speak to your Macmillan nurse /team tomorrow and failing contact there, your GP.

Basically - get advice. I have to say that many hospital specialities are very quiet at the moment, mostly because all routine care has been cancelled, but the least they can do is look after patients like you and I think you’ll find you will get a speedy response.

4-6 months after treatment finishes can be a hard time, so get advice and don;t lose heart. Many things will be getting better, but others are starting to appear. Keep on asking questions and take heart that so many of us are here leading good quality lives years after treatment. (Nearly 2.5 years in my case)

  • Hi MuFc2019, as the other post suggests, its best to get these issues checked out preferably by your consultant as he will know your history. Sometimes the jaw needs extra exercise to build up the muscles and nerves, I remember my jaw used to click and my consultant said it will go away in time along with any other niggles. Its always a worry so soon after surgery and treatment that's why it needs to be looked at so any problems can be rectified.Hope you can manage to speak to someone this week, all the best.

Thank you - yes I am a passionate united fan!

  • Thought so, i follow MUFC but live in Kent so all the top clubs are miles away so i support Gillingham as it's my local team. Please re-post if you need any more help or advice. Good luck to the Red Devils next season. Slight smile.

    Thanks Chris,

I am originally from High Wycombe, but have lived in Coventry for the past 25 years, so I end up supporting Wycombe and Cov.  Get to about 2 matches per season, looking forward to the football being back.

    Take care
