My husband finished radio 6 weeks ago for tonsil/lymph node cancer and has suddenly developed what we assume is lymphoedema under chin mostly (soft squashy sort of Turkey neck!) I emailed our specialist nurse with photos who confirmed it looks like lymphoedema and as we dont have an appointment in the oncology clinic for 2 weeks, offered to send us a leaflet. She said he could be referred to Lymphoedema nurses if it persists. We are a bit concerned about it in case it worsens in that time. It isnt painful. Has anybody experienced this and what treatment did you have?
Agree with Ron. Just get massaging often. If you don’t it gets hard and uncomfortable. I know the lymph nodes behind my ears are ok so I just massage towards those but down towards the nodes above the collar bone would be fine too. I get into a routine of 100 strokes every time I go for a pee and because of my dry mouth I drink and pee a lot ( sorry, too much info)

Hi Rusty
Could you eleborate about videos on YouTube showing the stretching and massage tecniques? What titles should i search for. Hubby has some of this so would be interested to see if it helps him.
Cheers
I'm sorry i can't remember specific titles, i just searched on youtube and a few different ones came up
Hi Madaboutmutts & Brandygirl. If your husbands have lymphoedema they should be referred to a Lymphoedema Specialist (usually a nurse). I waited a month to be seen from referral and others wait quite a lot longer - all the while you are relying on advice from helpful people on this site. I say this is not acceptable. You should be referred as soon as the diagnosis is made, Which means they should arrange to see your husbands to confirm Lymphoedema is the diagnosis - 6weeks is the classic time and its a very common diagnosis. I don’t know why they don’t tell us more about it as so many of us get it. It is not just the massage - there is more advice you should be given - meticulous skin care, exercises and other general advice. PLease get on to your teams and ask for referral to a Lymphoedema Specialist. You have a lot to put up with at 6 weeks post-treatment without delays in getting appropriate care for Lymphoedema. Why should you be searching the internet for solutions to a medical condition when we have professionals trained to treat and advice you! (But info on YouTube might be helpful while you wait!)
Vert best wishes
Hilary
Hi
You could also try private lymph drainage therapy. When I finally did get an appointment with the hospital lymphedema nurse she said referrals were taking too long as the sooner you can be seen, as I did, the better the recovery. A few private sessions were not too expensive and helped me to recover much quicker.
All the best
Amina
