Hi all, I’m Kevin a week ago told had cancer and this week at follow up was informed is HPV most likely in tonsils. Nothing showed up on MRI, booking me for PET-scan, have already been told outline of treatment will be 6 weeks radiotherapy with low dose chemotherapy. They are estimating treatment starting between mid and end of October, depending on scan, as they may pull me in to take tonsils and sample from throat/tongue, with a view to trying to find primary. Either way treatment will be the same just they want to see if they can narrow down the targeted area.
Was feeling really at sea and stressed before today as I was in the “you’ve got cancer, but no proper information” bracket. Now I know what it is and that outcome is generally seen as being fairly positive, I feel a bit better. Rough synopsis of the doctors words were, the treatment is going to be rough but, it’s really treatable and would fully expect in a few months time to be sitting here with you saying the cancer is gone. Doing my best to keep positive and looking forward to a Christmas possible feeling pretty terrible, or not. Was told that side effects are so individual that I could end up being anything from just a bit meh to absolutely rubbish.
thanks in advance for reading, Kevin
Hi Kevin.
Sorry to hear of your diagnosis. My husband finished radiotherapy almost 4 weeks ago for tonsil cancer spread to lymph node HPV P16 positive. Like you, it took a PET scan to find the primary followed by tonsillectomy. It's a tough treatment but doable and as you say, there is a good prognosis. My husband sailed through weeks 1-3 followed by gradual development of the usual side effects which peaked at week 7/8. Now he is feeling much better, still only able to have liquid/very soft food but improving all the time. Be selective on what you read - there are a lot of negative stories out there, but lots of good advice on here.
Good luck with your treatment.

PS
Forgot to say
It's a lot to take in and it really helps to have somebody go with you to your appointments to give you support and to remember what your team says to you.
Write questions down
Don't Google unless you are medically qualified to sift the real from unreal because there is a lot of out of date generalised information out there
Good luck

Prepare yourself for "absolute rubbish" Kevin and if you get "a bit meh" then go party somewhere because you'll have won the raffle; I've met one or two guys who've got lucky that way but lots more who've not I'm afraid.
That said outcomes are good, you'll get through rubbish or meh, sorry you find yourself here.
