I’m nearly 7 months post RT for OP SCC
no surgery no chemo
I’ve recovered well, eating most things but still little saliva and taste somewhat awry I’m active and busy all day at home
I’m finding it really hard to keep the weight on and have to resort to one or two fortisips a day
Anybody else have problems with their weight?
Hi Beesuit
I had my treatment 6 years ago and I struggled for a long time afterwards to maintain my weight. It got harder for me as the months went on and I went back to work and became more active. I was sent back to the Dietician and she told me to start counting my calories and keep a food diary. I began doing that and soon realised that although I thought I was eating enough that I was in fact only eating about 1500 calories a day. So she suggested that I moved onto 6 small meals a day and that helped me increase the calorie intake. It felt like hard work at times but I didn't really have much choice as I found the fortisips impossible to drink. As I didn't feel able to eat a larger quantity of food at mealtimes I was encouraged to try to make the food a bit more calorific. So I'd add a sauce or some grated cheese and I'd mix a bit of rice or pasta into my vegetables. The afternoon snack was allowed to be a treat so I'd have something like a bit of cake moistened with custard or ice cream.
I'm not very good with food ideas but I'm sure others will come up with some suggestions. There were some great discussions with helpful recipes a few months back which might help. xx
Hi Margaret
Thanks for the reply
I will take your advice and count my calories
Perversely I don't mind the Fortisips these days. When I was having my RT they were disgusting.

Hi Beessuit, when I was struggling to eat , which was only for a short while as I have to use the PEG now , I was told to add cream to soups ,sauces , coffee, tea etc just to get more calories , I believe most dairy related puddings are pretty good plus easier to swallow . I never had a weight problem as my start weight when I had cancer was under 9 stone , I now weigh a whopping 10.5 stone I see Linda has given some good advice as well . So lets hope this helps pile a few pounds for you , best wishes .

Hi Dani. I have sent you a private message as well. I kept a daily sheet and recorded what I ate calorie wise and aimed for 2500 a day for a good while some people have said go for 3000 but that was a struggle too far. Try adding cream to soups use butter nothing low calorie full fat but I drew then line at blue top milk yuck. Try eating 6 smaller meals as well for a while I also had porridge for breakfast with blueberries and golden syrup or honey . Try and put sauces or gravy with everything in fact I liken it to Hiw my mum cooked when I wasn’t little stews shepherds pies etc
