Acid reflux post surgery

Good Morning All. I just wanted to reach out to this group for some advice.

I had esophagectomy surgery in November and currently completed 2 cycles of chemo (2 more to go). My issue is that I am wakened by severe acid reflux. Which is disgusting and painful.

I take peptac (Gaviscon) before bed. I have my pillows raised, I try and eat around 17:00 and no later than 19:00. I also only lay on my back.

Does anyone have any other ideas to prevent the dreaded acid reflux?

Kind Regards

Graham

  • Have you not been prescribed any gastro resistant capsules.

  • Hi, yes I take omeprazol. I did think this morning, however, that I take 2 x tablets every morning. It may help taking the tablets at night?

  • I am a year post op and you are doing everything I do. I have to watch what I eat and drink. It is not very pleasant. Hope it eases soon

  • Hi there,

Thank you so much for replying and confirming.

I will try the omeprazol at night.

    If I get to a soloution I will re-post.

    Cheers

  • Yes I'd like to hear how you get on. Or why don't you take one in the morning and one at night although I would check with your GP first.  I take one every morning. You have to take them half an hour to one hour before food so you   won't be able to take them too late

  • Hi Graham, '

I take lansoprazol 30mg morning and evening. I used to take Peptac every bedtime but now I only take it if I’m feeling uncomfortable. I actually find sleeping on my right side (once my scar had healed)  works better for me than sleeping on my back. I wouldn’t say that I never suffer from reflux but it has definitely become much less frequent. I am 11 months post surgery. Hope this helps. CB

    • I had bad reflux  for about a year or so after I had my stomach removed  in August 23 . Claimed down hell of a lot , just got to watch what I eat and when I eat
