Good Morning All. I just wanted to reach out to this group for some advice.
I had esophagectomy surgery in November and currently completed 2 cycles of chemo (2 more to go). My issue is that I am wakened by severe acid reflux. Which is disgusting and painful.
I take peptac (Gaviscon) before bed. I have my pillows raised, I try and eat around 17:00 and no later than 19:00. I also only lay on my back.
Does anyone have any other ideas to prevent the dreaded acid reflux?
Kind Regards
Graham
Hi, yes I take omeprazol. I did think this morning, however, that I take 2 x tablets every morning. It may help taking the tablets at night?
I am a year post op and you are doing everything I do. I have to watch what I eat and drink. It is not very pleasant. Hope it eases soon
Hi there,
Thank you so much for replying and confirming.
I will try the omeprazol at night.
If I get to a soloution I will re-post.
Cheers
G
Yes I'd like to hear how you get on. Or why don't you take one in the morning and one at night although I would check with your GP first. I take one every morning. You have to take them half an hour to one hour before food so you won't be able to take them too late
Hi Graham, '
I take lansoprazol 30mg morning and evening. I used to take Peptac every bedtime but now I only take it if I’m feeling uncomfortable. I actually find sleeping on my right side (once my scar had healed) works better for me than sleeping on my back. I wouldn’t say that I never suffer from reflux but it has definitely become much less frequent. I am 11 months post surgery. Hope this helps. CB
Hi I am new to the group and I’m post surgery as well and post chemo first round, have you tried Omeptazole for acid reflux ?
Hi Graham
I am 17 months post surgery and 'was' still getting reflux until I mentioned it to my team. At the time I was on one 20mg Omeprazole in the morning and one at night. I didn't get reflux every night, and like you was sleeping with raised pillows etc. However, two game changers...
The first was a soft wedge pillow from Dunelm. FAR, far better than anything else I've tried, including memory foam ones. This is a lovely soft one, but quite high (I have my feather pillow on top too). No more neck ache from just normal pillows... heaven!
The second and best thing though, my nurse practitioner who I'm in contact with and see at my check-ups increased my Omeprazole to 40mg morning and night, and WOW! What a change! I hardly ever get reflux now, it's made a huge difference for me. She did say not to suffer, and if that didn't work she could 'bring out the bad boys' as she described them (stronger meds), but the 40mg Omeprazole twice daily is working an absolute treat.
Do speak to your team, you really don't need to suffer. I hope they listen to you, and good luck.
