My father is due to start his second cycle tomorrow and has been told they will be upping the dose from 75% to 100% as he has had no symptoms in the first cycle. Has anyone had this?
In my mind it is good he has no symptoms and it seems crazy to change the dosage, what would the benefit of this be please? He is at The Royal Marsden and so I know it is one of the best places to be taken care of. However I just want to understand the rationale.
Grateful of any advice as my mother of father wont ask questions at the hospital.
Many thanks
Hi
Obviously I’m not an oncologist so I can’t say what the reasoning is , but I would look at it as maybe the stronger the dose the more effective it could be against the malignancy.? Maybe because your Dad’s body coped so well with the first cycle his oncologist has decided he can go that bit further by upping the strength and hitting the cancer even harder ? …This is just my take on it in simple terms .
My husband had all his chemo at 100% strength and the side effects built up with each cycle ..By the final one his body was ‘battered’ ( his word!) Although he did seem to tolerate each cycle reasonably well and pre surgery his surgeon told him it had ‘obliterated the tumour’ .However over two years later he’s still saying he’s feeling the effects from it .
Its understandable your Dad is hesitant to ask questions as he’s probably reluctant to hear the answers .My husband’s oncologist would always ask us how much did we want to know ? Some patients just prefer to trust the specialists and the process .
Sincerely hoping all goes well for your Dad and there’s positive a outcome for him
