Hi, I'm new here and have joined as my dad has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He and my mum are keeping everything to themselves and saying everything is fine (which is their right but isn't helpful to me or my sister). So far my dad has had a camera down his throat (where they took samples), a PET scan and on Wednesday he had an endoscopy.

My question is, at this point will he know what grade it is and will he have been given grades for the TNM staging system?

Many thanks

  • Sorry to hear about your Dad. If an endoscopy, pet scan plus a further ultrasound ? endoscopy are completed they will have an appointment to confirm diagnosis and staging. It’s difficult if they are reluctant to share information …. I hope it can be resolved.

  • Hi

I don’t know if this is the case for everyone but my husband only received his Cancer stage after he had a laparoscopy and we met his surgeon to discuss the results .The laparoscopy took place after the Pet scan and endoscopies

Hoping all goes well for your Dad

  • My initial reply seems to have disappeared unless it’s my system Thinking

  • Yes that would be usual if a laparoscopy is used …. my husband didn’t have one they didn’t feel it was necessary.

  • If I remember correctly in my husband’s case it was the only option as four endoscopies were  unsuccessful in reaching the centre of the tumour and we were told biopsies were being taken from the wrong place ! Long story which resulting in me having him transferred to another hospital where he was fitted with a JEJ feeding line into his duodenum during the laparoscopy as he couldn’t eat or drink at this stage ..and after five long months of utter farce at the previous hospital , within days we then finally received his definitive diagnosis.

This is over two years ago and thankfully alls looking good up to now .

  • What an awful time for you. So glad things are looking more settled now.

  • Hi Rougie18. By now your dad's diagnosis will being coordinated by a nurse practioner from the MDT team. It sounds from what you say that he is close to a full diagnosis. Normally a CAT scan precedes the PET scan as part of this process. He will no doubt shortly be called to a meeting either with the oncologist or surgeon or both depending on what treatment route is proposed. Maybe you can persuade your dad to let you support him at this meeting as there is likely to be a flood of information at this stage. Best wishes to you all.

  • Omg, that is awful. Glad things are looking good now x
