Unable to burp

Hi there,

My wife was diagnosed with Stage 3 Oesophagus Cancer in October 23.

She had Ct scan, Pet Scan, Upper Laporoscopy, feeding tube fitted, 2x cycles of Chemo (FLOT).

After the 2nd cycle of chemo they cancelled any more as she had developed colon sepsis.

Another laporoscopy has been performed to see if the cancer has spread any further and if not, they will go ahead with the operation to remove the tumour.

the tumour did shrink under the chemo and has grown again since.

The biggest problem she has at the moment is pain where the tumour is located and no ability to relieve it other than retch in the hope of burping. The is continuous all day long unless a large (5ml) of oramorph is applied.

my question is; had anyone else encountered this before and if so, what did you use for relief?

Many thanks,

Richard

Hi Richard and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

Not being able to burp and retching all day must be extremely distressing for your wife. Has she spoken to her hospital team about this as they would want to know?

  • Hi there,

yes, we finally got a call back from the hospital and they have said to use buscopan

it seems to be working in conjunction with anti sickness and pain relief

fortunately the retching seems to have now stopped.

  • That's good to hear and must be such a relief for your wife.

  • You can get that prescribed for you by your G.P, just in case you are paying for it from a chemist.
