Hi everyone,
My names Rebecca and I’m really worried about my grandad at the moment as we wait for his results and he undergoes more tests. Just wondering if anyone has any reassuring advice for us? He had an endoscopy yesterday and the doctors found a 4cm tumour which they believe to be malignant in his lower oesophagus. Along with a hernia below and what they believe to be a benign stomach tumour. He goes for a CT scan tomorrow. He’s 74 in the summer. He hasn’t been a smoker nor does he drink heavy but he has had acid reflux issues from being young. They mentioned possible surgery but don’t know yet. Anyone got any advice what they believe his prognosis may be or treatment could be? We just need some uplifting words at the moment because the internet is full of doom and gloom when we have searched anything
thank you :)
Hi Rebecca
sorry to hear about your grandad. I lived with reflux for most of my adult life, munching my way through packets of Rennies like there was a sale on.
When I was 62, just after I retired, I had problems swallowing and was sent for a endoscopy and yes, they saw a tumour - almost certainly malignant. Then just like your grandad I had a ct scan a week or so later then meetings scans and tests on practically every week for the next six weeks or so.
To cut a seven year story short, I had chemo and surgery and soon became I’m fit, healthy and happy. Now I’m living a normal life (as normal as anyone these days). Can’t wait to get travelling again. I’ve seen more of the far flung corners of the world sing my surgery than I ever did before.
I still enjoy my curries, the odd pint and a regular afternoon gin and tonic.
There are a lot of us survivors contributing to this forum, and even more who have put it behind them and returned to normal life.
So keep positive. Show him you care and help him to believe this is not a death sentence.
Counting the days, making every day count.
Brent
