Tea drinking and sweet stuff

May sound like a silly one but I am getting really bad stomach aches/cramps when drinking Tea.    I was a massive tea drinker before I got ill and I really crave it.    No other vices lol

I had the Ivor Lewis op and since then I can drink most other stuff,  but not Tea (or coffee but don't drink much of that).  Don't take sugar either.   It was that bad with pain  (not isolated to the tea drinking at the time)   that I was sent for a CT scan for gallbladder problems but it all abdominal organs were clear,  which was good.     Through a process off elimination,   I found that drinking tea caused it.   ie,  I drank water for a day only then milk  then milk and water,  then tea and the tea is what was giving me the pain.

It gives me almost dumping syndrome type effects but I drink milk and hot chocolate drink Ok, along with cold drinks.

Just wondered if anybody had the same.  My doc says I should be able to eat/drink anything but I am finding that I am sensitive to sweet stuff too if I eat too much.

Anybody in the same boat or know anything about this.?

Thanks all.

  • Hi SDT

I haven't experienced anything like this with tea. but I can say my tastes have changed since chemo/surgery: I never drank tea before now I have two cusps a day and drink less coffee. I drink beer (but not lager) now but less wine!

I do know that, as an endocrinology consultant once said to me, tea can "get things moving"  for some people. So I am assuming that it is quite common for tea to have an effect on the gut peristalsis/movement of some people. This may be what is causing the cramps/pain.

Sugar and easily digested carbohydrate will have a quite dramatic rise in blood sugar, as it can be absorbed quickly after an Ivor Lewis, this can lead to an inappropriate insulin response resulting in a low blood sugar i.e. late dumping syndrome.

I guess you are finding what the new plumbing will tolerate. I found that this changed/improved as time passed. For me a new normality established itself after a couple of years.

Counting the days, making every day count.

Are you drinking tea very hot? Or drinking fast? Just wondering because sometimes if I drink hot latte too quickly I can get early dumping. And too much sugary stuff can cause problems, but I find even nearly 3 years after surgery I still get random dumping. Good luck and kind regards Frank.

    Update to this.

I found out that I was post-op lactose intolerant.

Quite by chance the Dietitian said to cut out lactose from my diet to see if it improves things.   Well I did and I was instantly better.

No more cramps, sickness, diarrhoea and have reduced the Gaviscon that I have been taking.

So if you are having similar post op ,  then try this or a gluten free diet.  Apparently it can change your 'wiring'  because so much is displaced and dissected/reconnected.

The NHS have not carried out a study of this but the Dietitian says its quite common -  its a shame that the NHS can't do a proper study to see just how many people this affects post op.

Take care all and always keep fighting.
