Hi

has anyone got any advice on travel/health insurance for Europe.

Thanks Phil

  • Hi Phil and welcome to the site, up until this year I would have said give euro tunnel a ring as they offer a reason price cover with very little screening, however they have made changes so not sure if its generally available now or if its just for travellers on the tunnel train, may be worth calling them to see.

the is also an insurance group you could have a look at and the key bit of advice is see who the underwriter is of which ever policy you take out and see what the web says as the are some who offer cheaper cover but are not necessarily good at paying out and some cases are well documented, the may still be some posts in the travel section about them as I am not sure if they were all removed.

Otherwise its a case of trawling through and seeing who offers what at what price and from my experience prices vary, your challenge will be you are not long out of treatment and still on maintenance, so may find calling companies is better.

    Lets see what others share

    John

thanks for your advice. My wife would like to go on a cruise to Portugal and the Canaries and she certainly deserves it! I hope I can make it happen for her but am worried about being able to get insurance.

    Thanks again

    Phil

  • Phil you will get insurance its just a matter of cost as the canaries fall into a dearer band as does all of Spain and I would guess a cruise will raise the cost too. I am a regular to the canaries and had DLBC which is aggressive 10 years ago and over the years premiums have varied from about £180 down to £30 for the two of us, plus the first time I travelled was 8 months post treatment and got cover.

Try All Clear and if you do a google search for cover for pre existing medical travel insurance the are a couple of comparison sites that will show up and they will give you an idea of what's available and at what cost. Also if you have insurance provided via your bank account its worth calling to see what extra charge they will make to maintain your cover. You will also find some will offer cover excluding the cancer, I never went down that road as I always felt full cover for everything was best and less hassle if something did go wrong.

  • Hi and a second welcome to the online community

I'm not a member of this group but the subject of your post caught my eye.

Following on from the excellent advise that johnr gave you about travel insurance I thought I'd provide you with the link to the travel insurance group.

If you want to join us over there just click on the link I've provided. Once you've joined look for the post called 'Recommended Travel Insurance' (it's usually on the first page) as it's where we try to keep all the recommendations from other community members in one place.

Unfortunately it can be more difficult to find travel insurance when you have a cancer diagnosis. It is best to phone the travel companies rather than do online quotes. Make sure you have all the information to hand about your diagnosis and treatment before contacting the insurers. This is a list of common questions that insurers might ask when you're applying for insurance.

Some insurers will ask for a letter from your doctor to prove that they have given you permission to travel. In any case it's always best to make sure that you have checked with your doctor that it's okay to travel and that this has been recorded in your notes in case of a claim.

I do hope you can get insurance and that you have a lovely holiday

I finished chemotherapy in June and I got travel insurance with HolidaySafe for a reasonable price for a 1 year policy including USA.

    Hi PPS

I've extensivly researched travel insurances and obtained numerous quotes.

Last year I would have recommended Eurotunnel, but as JohnR said, they have closed thei net.

Now the bst of the bunch is Boots online.  I got an annual joint policy for Europe (exc Spain) for £100. I'm still recieving treatment.

    Good luck
