My mum had her second intrathecal on Wednesday alongside her fourth R mini chop and although she suffered with a really bad shoulder after each yesterday and today she has had the most terrible diarrhoea. I just wonder if anyone else has had this as a side effect or if it may be something else. She thought they gave her an additional medication this time as well as the Methtrexate but is not really sure

  • Hi  and good that you navigated over to this group.

Yes, unfortunately bad Diarrhoea is one of the more unfortunate side effects of having treatment.

It is important that her team know that she is still struggling, so I would always recommend calling her Specialist Nurse whose number should be on some of the information she was given..... or her hospital chemo line again she should have the number.

Also very important that she drinks a lot of water, I mean 2-3Lts a day to keep her hydrated, to flush out the toxins the chemo will release and protect her kidneys.

When you are not sure of anything do call her team ((hugs))

Ah ok thanks again I have managed to get her drinking today and hoping that things will settle as she has been ok for a couple of hours. I think I will call for advice and thank you so much again for your help x

  • Well done, it can be hard work but you need to be vigilant.

There is always someone around to help out as best as we can.

  • They had to stop my intrathecal methotrexate after the second time because I developed a heap of side effects severe enough to land me in hospital.

Make sure you keep the team informed about any side effects so they can be managed or treatment adjusted.  Before they give each treatment they should be asking about side effects so make sure she writes them down and doesn't forget to mention them.  Also make sure she doesn't suffer in silence between appointments.
