Had a colposcopy abd no treatment needed they were happy for her to go back to her regular 3 years smears.

she is now spotting blood between periods for the last 2 cycles. She had made a GP appointment

  • Hi  and welcome to our group.

I think it’s natural to be worried if your daughter has a symptom which needs checking out. My elder daughter too had abnormal cells and a colposcopy but didn’t require any further treatment.

Carrying the hpv virus is extremely common-most people who have ever been sexually active, even once will come across it in their lifetime. However, the virus doesn’t always cause any issues for the vast majority of people-some of us are just unlucky and it can cause damage to our cervical cells. By keeping on top of our regular smear tests any issues can be identified early and the cells can be removed if necessary. However, the doctors have followed the correct protocol in putting your daughter back to the normal smear schedule as she didn’t require treatment after her colposcopy.

The hpv itself doesn’t cause spotting or bleeding, but the fact that your daughter has had some spotting between cycles is worth checking out.

There can be many reasons for this, especially in young women, but seeing the gp is a good idea. I’d expect the doctor to examine her, and if necessary refer her for another colposcopy to have a closer look at her cervix if they think that’s necessary.

There could be a hormonal reason, or it could be caused by using contraception, so it’s best to try not to worry unnecessarily at this point, though I know that’s not easy!

I hope the gp appointment will give you both reassurance, but do let us know how things go-hopefully nothing untoward will be found.

    Sarah xx
